Two men, the chiefs of a neighbouring village, who had been found guilty of perjury, were promenatled through the Bauer mounted on donlieys with their faces tamed to wards the tails of the animals, and hav- ing their heads dressed out in n grotes- que manner, with the hairy part of a sweeping brush on their forehead, and some cloves of garlic round their neck. They were preceded by the public crier, who announced the crime of which they had been guilty. After being thits for some time exposed to the hootings of the people, they were taken to the court of the Palace, were dismissed, and declar- eil incapable of ever holding any public office. The offenders had been bribed to give evidence that the widow ofa Turk, recently dead. had been delivered of a Clllltl. afterwards deceased, and wliich circiimstance would make the wiilnw the solo heir of all her husband's pr- party. The relations of the husband he wewr. inti-rfereil. and clearly proved ilw guilt of the witnesses. and they were i-omli-inor-tl to the punishment above int.-iitionetl. The greatest havoc took place about the latter end of last October and the begin- ning of November. In this interval, no fewer than 600 ships sought refuge in the Humber. Many more, however, could reach no shelter; and thus, in the course ofa few days, the unprecedented number of 300 vessels were lost or dam- aged, with the fearful loss of2l7 lives. The greater part of this terrible work of destruction toolt place on the east coast of England, off Flamborough Head. The person who first related to us the circumstance of discovering the article has sent it to us, occompanied by a note, as follows :— “ This is the Horse Shoe I was telling about. Mr. Martin Cleveland. of Horton, found it in the centre of a spruce tree, measuring I4 inches in diameter, about 6 feet above the root. 'l'he tree was solid and the heart of it rtin through the shoe; but the outside presented no sign of any- thing strange being enclosed within. The way Mr. Cleveland found the shoe was, he put a log on the fire, and when it was partly consumed he saw the corks slick- ing out of the brand.” The shoe is well made and in agood state of preservation. It may have be- longed, perhaps, to a poney of one of the French inhabitants of Horton, that lost it in straying through the woods, when the tree that hid it so long and clmu-ly wasjnst pt-epint; above the ground.
