Had he gone out at night with covered lights, itis freely believed he could have eecaped. On July 4th,in a fog, sixty miles off Sable Island, the chip collided with the French liner La Burgoyne, bound for New York. The latter sank and six hundred were drowned. Two hundred were saved.
