Pllllllli The following letter was received by Mrs. Charles H. McDonald., Caledonia, South, from her son Hugh. April 22. 1016. _ Dear Mother:- When l was in the trenches l had several _parcels, one night l got three, one was i’l‘om Annie, the other two was from Montague from an association. _'I’h_ore was a card hut l lost it in the mix up ot_open- ing them so l coulli'nt answer it dl- rect. Onhgof the parcels had tobacco. cigarette. Bum. towel and a pair of sox. The other parcel was a big one done up in a big tin can soldered over. lt was nearly full of cake. extraordinary good cake too. while the rest of the space was taken up with chocolate_ lt was all very good and I was very sur- prised lndeed to get such swell stuff and the cake went line; lt go to me as we were due to leave the front line and move to the supportline. so l had to get rid of all the stuff in a hurry as l had no means of carrying it out with mo. l chopped it up and let my squad at it and we all ate as much as we could ent and then there was lots left over sitll. They all declared it the best cake they ever tasted. I had my old chum Cecil Allred in the dug out with us for the feed also n Charlotte- town boy by the name of ilattenbury. His people are 'merchants in town. He belonged to the same troop as me in the old regiment. Last night l had another parcel irom these kind people in Montague. with two pairs of the heaviest socks I ever saw. two packets of tobacco and ci- garette. I was surprised again_ in ooe of the socks there was it note. lt said from the N. P. A. or something like that as near or I could make it out. lf you know any oi’ the members I wan't you to thank them for me I cer- tainly appreciate their kindness in sending me all that useful stuff. I forgot the gloves-the parcel last night had n pair of leather gloves which will come in very useful in this weather as they are just right. l am going to write a short note to the N. P_ A., Mon- tague on chance. We hal] a long sneel in the trenches this time. lt was very interesting and l enjoyed it very much till l got laid up with a bad cold and then I was very miserable for n while. l had pretty high fever for a ~.vl~_lle but l` stuck it out and I pulled through (2. K. l am feeling shaky yet but l'll be back in my usual form in a week or so again. Sonle of ollr boys are getting away on leave now. l expect l’ll he going off too before long. _ One oi the boys got hack this nlorll- ing and had a great time while away_ l have several good friends in England that l'll bc glad to see when I get over there.
