§pnrts ' by Johnf Neville With baseball finally finished and hockey just getting going, most of the sports fan's attention has been switched to the events on the gridiron, most specifically football. 'Jhe N.F.L. has just reached their halfway point and upsets are becoming the rule rather than the exception. Each week there appears to be several key upsets which has thrown the standings into havoc. Perhaps the biggest upset and at least the most recent was Seattle's victory over the powerful Oakland Raiders. In the C.F.L. the season is winding down and this may be the tine to look at possible playoff matchups and who will be there cone Grey Cup weekend.- Out West the three play— off teams have been decided with Calgary and Winnipeg neeting in the semi—finals. Look for Ralph Brock and the explosive Blue Barber offence to overcome the C.F.L.'s top coach, Jack Gotta, and a young and ‘ inexperienced Stanpeder crew. However, that is as far as the Blue Bombers will go. Everything Winnipeg does well the - Edmonton Eskimos do better (short kicks excluded). ‘11'1e Alberta team is the class of the West with two top— quarterbacks, Wilkinson and Nbon, exceptional receivers led by McGowan and Scott and a tough defence. In the East,» Ottawa , will watch the rest fight it out for the right to meet them in the final. The Allouettes have second clinched and will host the semi—final. Hamilton and/Toronto are fighting for the last playoff spot. It should cone down to the last game in Hamilton and as. usual the Argos will find a way to lose it. In the semi-finals the 'I‘i—Cats could pull the big upset if Jimmy Edwards can regain form, Jimmy Jones surprise the sports world and play a decent game at"quarter- back, and the A15 continue to have injury problems. Either way it‘ won't make mudq difference because the only team in the East that could beat Ottawa is in the N.F.L. (N.E. Pats.) / ‘ ‘Ihat brings us to a Grey Cup between Edmonton and Ottawa. If this is the case, pray for good weather and sit bad< and watch just a great game. Although Ottawa won the game during the regular season, look for the Eskimos' defence and football's (all of football) top placekicker Dave Cutler to be the difference. College-wise, the C.I.A.U. is approad'ling their College Bowl. 'Jhis writer foresees an all— Ontario final with , defending champion Western meeting Queen's. ('lhe nod going to Western.) As you will knon, our footballers evened their record at 3—3 with an'easy win over U.N.B. This weekend our guys host Mount Allison in the Fall Fest garre. Well, it will be the "Fall—Feast" gane as our guys will give Garney Henley and the Mounties another Island wehxme.‘aastyear,tmEI, 49 - Mmmt A., 0). Look and enjoy as our guys will rout the Sackville school by over 30 points. / The gate will also mark' the final game in college ball of Mike lyriotokis (No. 59) . After ayfine five year career with the Panthers, the UPEI captain has led a stingy defence, which should earn him a certain all—cmference ' honour and a probable — all—Canadian selection. Other seniors who will be playing the last game are Mike Kennedy (No. 60), Socky MacDonald (No. 33) , Dave Connaughton (No. 21) , and Mati Kolga (No. 75) , Marcel Dupuis (No. 44) , Ozzie D'Ippolito (No. 6), Jon Paul McIntyre (No. 7), Frank Costa (No. 25) , Dave Bryant (No. 52) , and Richard Blair (No. 73) . All these players have enjoyed fine careers and all will be missed by the club. Come on guys, ' and end it on a good note! 'Jhe hockey Panthers continue their exhibition 0 schedule. Despite heavy losses (Val Mitchell, Lortie, McInnis and Arsenault) the club is undefeated in preseason with a record of 3-0—1. The first big test will . be Nov. 4 & 5 when they host two exhibition games with St. F.X.
