Burgess Sudden anger it Is clear .. often put: an end to tear. -Old Mother Nature. Mrs. Beauty the Wood Duck is I timid person. She has reason to be timid. All members of the Duck family are easily frightened. They take to their stout swift wing: at the first suggestion of danger. This is because they have nothing with which to fight. They have no stout. pointed bills; hook- ed claws: nothing with which to tight. so they always seek to fly away from danger. and always they are watching and listening for it. Mrs. Beauty had left her nest in a house the Old Hermit had put In a big tree for her. it was a keg, as a small barrel is called. The Old Hermit had cut a doorway and had placed the keg halfway up in the tree. Wood Ducks do not nest on the ground it they can find a hollow tree. This small keg was quite as good as a hollow tree. Mrs. Beauty loved it. Yes. sir. she loved it. in it she had laid ten precious eggs. For some days now she had been sittinil 0" these eggs. But she couldnt sit all the time. Like other folks, she, had to eat. So every day she left those precious eggs for It short time while she went to get her food. For awhile. only Prickly Pork,V the Porcupine. who had chanced to climb up in that tree. and Bobby Coon who had found out her secret. knew where the nest was. Bobby Coon had tried to climb up to it, but couldn't get past Prickly Porky. After getting a couple of Prickly Porky's little spears, called quills, in his face Bobby Coon gave up. He had lost his appetite for eggs. Then Chatterer the Red Squirrel found out the secret. Now Chatter- or dearly loves eggs and he meant to have some of those he knew must be up in that home in the tree. He waited and watched un- til fig saw Mrs. Beauty leave to get her dinner. He wasted no time then. It didn't take him long to get up that tree and through the doorway. There he stopped to gloat over what he found-those ten precious eggs. Now for some reason. Mrs. Beauty changed her mind. Per- haps she had forgotten something. Anyway. she turned back just after Chatterer had reached that nest. Perhaps she had a feeling that something was wrong. You know. folks do have such a feeling sometimes. It seems to be a sort of warning. Anyway. Mrs. Beauty .....M...:M..i. MULTICOLORED BAT! WADENA. Sask. As soon as she came in sight of the house, she saw red. She saw red in two ways. Some- thing red was hanging out of the doorway of her home. She knew instantly what it was. it was a red tail. She knew, too. whose tail it was. Also she knew what that red-coated rascal who owned that tail was up there for. She forgot that she was a timid person. She flew into a rage. Anger killed all tear. Peuplegwho go into a rage like that are said to "see red." Mrs. Beauty was see- ing red in this way also. She didn't hesitate a second. She flew straight for that home and those precious eggs. The Yellowhead pass highway. running 500 miles from Edmonton to Kamloops. BC. lost out to the Big Bend road from Calgary to Kamlnops when a route was being chosen for the Trans - Canada Highway. The Calgary-Kamloops stretch is about the same dis- tance. Nearly half the Yellowhead is paved. from Edmonton in Jasper. except for a :15-mile stretch which is expected to be hard-surfaced this year. The .big hurdle on the Yellow- head road is the 125-iiiile section from Jasper to Blue River. B.C., now a dirt road. From Blue River to Louis Creek, BC. the road is gravelled and passable through- out the year. Frnm Louis Creek to Hailey Creek it is being graded. and the last I4 mliPS from Hrfley Creek to Kamlonps has been paved. The Yel- lowhead highway route annual caravan in late May went to Mount Robson. the highest peak in the Canadian Rocky moun- tains. Approximately 1.200 per- sons in 200 cars travelled the 55 miles west from Jasper and east from Blue River to the Mount Robson picnic grounds. At the picnic. William Johnston ntABlue River said: ”The money licing spent on survey work alone on the southern (Big Bend) route will amount to more than what would be needed to hardsurface the Yellowhead road."
