The money needed to build the school is borrowed from a bank, on the guarantee of the depart~ Iment of education, which pay: approximately one-half the cost, after the building is completed. The department also provides 50 per cent of the cost of bosses used in transporting the pupils to the school. L The remaining hall’ of the cost .nf the building is borne by the district and is usually paid off by iioating a bond issue. Seventy-five per cent of salaries of vocational teachers employed in the school is also paid hy the department o." . cducation. I Preliminary plans provide for a school with machine shops, wood- Iivorking drafting and other voca- tional facilities for students from Grades '7 to ll. About 175 students or these grades are now crowded into the present Rnthesay Consol- idated School. It is expected the new regional composite high school will be situated near the present school. but with separate playground facilities. At present, the upper grades of the Rothesay Consolidated School are crowded and a great increase iii the student body is anticipated within the next few years with the large number oi new homes being constructed in the Rothesay district. N. z., kept. no - (C?) - Norfolk Island, u small isolated island of about. l8 square miles in the Tasman Sea, is the subject o! o. minor international dispute. , . Norfolk Island was for a time the home of the descendants oi’ the Bounty rnutlueers after they migrated from Pitcairn, but many Khaki gets its name from a Hindu word meaning dust-colored. of them later returned to their original home. The island is 800 miles from Australia and about. M0" from New zealand. but is under Aus- tralian administration. There is g growing demand in New Zeal- and that it should be translerred to that Dominion. It. is very fertile and produces large quantities of citrus and other fruits which have difficulty in finding a. market in Australia, whereas they would have s. ready sale in New Zealund. Political difficulties have hitherto hinder- ed the growth o! the trade to New Zealund. Much quicker communication now exists between Norfolk and New Zealand than with Australia. as a regular air service has been established to the island which is becoming a popular holiday re- sort during the winter owing to its equable climate. suggestions have been made that Prime Minister Peter Fraser should discuss transfer of the island during the British Com- monwealth conference on the Japanese peace treaty at Can- berm.
