by John Neville 'Jhe world of spcrts is sometimes very surprising but recent events have led this writer to realize that winners have a tendency to keep on winning. By that I mean that teams or individuals who are accustcned to winning generally do so even when they are not expected to. Over the years we have heard about the winning tradition of the Montreal Canadians. 'Ihat tradition is backed by a half a century of championship teams. How— ever this past couple of weeks have given us more examples. The world champion New York Yankees have come roaring back and now find " themselves with a comfortable lead over the Boston Red Sox. A couple of weeks ago the bean- towners were heading towards a division title and then suddenly lost four straight games at home to the Yankees. During that series the Yankees playedalmo'st perfect baseball and the usually flawless md Sox looked like the Toronto Blue Jays. A complete turnaround that has left the Red Sox fans'and management in complete shock. 'mis past weekend also gave a few more examples of this winning tradition. 01 Saturday afternoon our UPEI football Panthers outplayed St. Mary's. 'Ihey outplayed the Huskies because they are a much better foot- ball team. However, some—— how the Halifax team came away the winners. Sure they did it all in the first ten minutes but the mere fact is that they Al PROVES _ WINNING TRADITION but they did. :I can't explain it. Perhaps the best example of this winning tradition was given to the sports world last Friday night when the greatest athlete of our time and perhaps of all time, MIAMMAD ALI, performed yet another boxing miracle. At the age of 36 he danced, shuffled, weaved, and jabbed his way "to became the first man to regain the world title a third time. He beat a man who was in superior shape and a man 14 years his junior. How did he do it? I say he did it because he knows how to win. He is acoustcmed to winning and as a result he would accept nothing short of winning. 'Ihe only sad part of Friday ' night's fight was that it may have been the last time Ali will fight and that means it is the end of the greatest career in boxing history. He will be missed by the sport but this writer is glad to see him go out on top because he is the GREATEST. PANTHER DROPPINCB Our soccer team played a well but just couldn't do it. 'Jhings are looking up however. 'Jhe UPEI golf team will be hosting the AUAA champion— ship this year beginning next Monday at Belvedere. 'mis writer is’part of . that team and will modestly predict'that UPEI will win the title. Our foot— ballers head to St. F.X. this weekend and will pick up their first win of the year. It will be closer than most may think but our guys will ‘ prevail. 'I'c the Red Sox fans....get a hold of a 1964 Philadelphia fan and did it. There is no way share your sorrow. ..the that SMU should have won Phillies choked too. . . . . St. of X Football 575- 0f X Field Hockey $5512.35. - U. of Mom Sept“ 24 Dalhousie Field hockey 2: 00 P.
