EVENING SESSION munlcations from ull over the Prov- automobiles appeared to him to be LEGISLATURE Continued from page one. He a M I i ntinued his s h in ince and the objections mudc to the insurmountable. The conditions were- diflerent in this Province to Ontario, and Quebec, and even there the( legislators were at their wits' ends: how to deal with the automobiles. After much thought on the subject he could not see any way out of thc- difficulty except to bring in an uct totally prohibiting the traffic of thc automobiles' Hc thought such it measure would meet with |:cnernl_ approval throughout the Province. It' was a great hardship that womeni and young people should be shut outi oi the pleasure of driving; und it was, also no doubt an injury to trnde.l He did not think it would keep rinyl tourists away. ' Mr. Mathleson thought it was uoti necessary for him to any much. He, had already spoken of the necessity, of such legislation in commenting on- the Governur‘s Speech. He had put; forward then the arguments of that previous speakers. He was surprised' that the resolution had to be_intro- duced by a private member. The* Government shou,d have introduced, the resolution. We were only tnlklngi now, what we sllollld be doing is considering a law to prohibit the running oi the autos. i Dr. Warburton-agreed in the main| with the previous speakers but he thought that if the machines became cheap in the furture it would heal pity to have such a totally prohibi- tory law on the statute hooks. i Hon. J. M. Clark thought there would not have been such on aglta- tion throughout the country if auto drivers had been' ns considerate as the, drivers oi autos were in Sum- merside. Speaking for Summerside llc had no mandate to ask for the pro- hibition of the automobile. Mr. McMillan (West River) spoke strongly against the autos. It was the duty- of the representatives of the people to voice the opinion of the people of the country. He con- sidered the legislature had n right to place prohihitory restrictions ou the autos, which terrorized the peo- ple. He thought that in the con- solidating of the election law the women of the Province had been overlooked-they should have been given s, vote, and if they had votes they would show what they thought of automobiles. Hon. Geo. E. Hughes, spoke in favor of the resolution and moved amendment that the prohibition ex- tend to the cities, towns and villages of the Province. ` Hon. Mr. Smith spoke oi the gen- eral feeling in the country against automobiles and thought it only proper, while there were so few automobiles ‘that the legislation should pass in order to meet. thc, desires and convenience of the majority of the people. Mr. McKinnon thought that the! automobiles would become cheaper in time, but that if this act. is made totally prohibitive it would be hard to repeal it. He thought the act should be limited. @ Mr. Macdonald thought it was not, quite right to pass such u sweeping-i Luml ln *.\||~nl\ol..., .~l.\.~\nlu-in-»\-nn unit ly prohibitive low against the auto- l,.
