Gar FerryTraffic For January An increase of 55 carloads of im- ports to the Province in January. 1949 as compared to the corres- ponding month of 1948 is noted in the report from the office of the Superintendent o! the Island Div- ision of the Canadian National Railways. In the matter of exports. however. a decrease of 34 carloads ia noted. Imports total was 1040 compared to 985 in January 1.948. while exports numbered 1258 last month as against 1292 in 1949. Bluest gain in imports to the Province was in coal, with 252 car- loads being ferried across the Straits last month against 193 in January 1948. Gas and oils follow- ed closely with a 57 carload bulge. the figures being 125 against 68. Miscellaneous shipments also show- gg a 29 car gain, being 115 against Fertilizer showed a. decided de- crease, there being 66 carloads lrn- ported to the Province in January 1948 against 20 last month. Flour and focd also showed a minus fig- ure. 131 carloade coming here in 1948 compared to 120 this year. Other imports with January 1948 figures in brackets include: Autos l8 (20). Fruits. 11 (9), Hardware nil (8), Limes 15 (27). Lumber 21 (12), Livestock 7 (3). Meats 4 (9). Machinery 12 (4), Sugar 6 (1), Salt 4 (2). Railway coal 37 (26), Railway material 30 (8). Molasses 1 (nil) cement 4 (8). Hay nil (26). Biggest gain in exports “as re- corded in livestock with 73 car- loads leaving the Province last month. compared to 58 1n January 1948. Potatoes, however showed a decrease, 852 carloads leaving the Province last month compared to the 875 shipped out in January 1949. This was due in large part to the late start the shippers re- ceived tlue to weather conditions last fall. However 12 more carloads of turnips were shipped. 164 In 1949, 152 Ill 1948. Fish showed a carload gain being 7 against 6: hay and straw showed up with a 14 carload increase. the 14 cars-representing just that much gain with none being shipped out in January 1948. Moss likewise showed a big gain. five carloads leaving the Province in January of this year compared to the single load being shipped in January 1948.
