Spencer of this city has received and- accepted a hearty and unanimous call to Waterville, Annapolis Valley, N. S., and will be inducted on the 29th lust. Mr. Spencer will receive a salary of $1000 with fine manse and four weeks holidays. In St. James Church last evening the pastor, Dr. T. F. Fullerton, preach- ed, in his usually eloquent style, an inspiring and appropriate sermon, his subject being “The Christmas Message of Peace, and War." He took his text from the second chapter of the Gospel of St. Luke, "Peace on earth and good will towards men.” On one occasion, he said, a number of distinguished literary men were gathered together, discussing the he- roes of the past. They discussed tne manner in which they would recclvei them wcrc they to uppcar in their midst. The ilrat name rniscd wus Dante, thc run-n who was siipposcil to have been in liell, and no onc could make response. The name of Shakes- pearc was next quoted, and Charles Lamb, who loved Shakespeare so wcll, said: “lf he were to appear now we would rlsc and lift our hands and re- ccive him in ccsl_acy.” The next name was that of Jesus Christ, and Lamb then said: “Were Jesus Christ. to ap- pear in our ,midst now we would fall on our knees and worship illm." And yet, continued the preacher, it was very doubtful what would happen were Jesus Christ to appear, and thc only thing that gave any ccrtitude in dis- cussing a probability of this kind was the character of the individual. “Revelation is according to charac- ter and we are not surprised that this great revelation that brings with it be- nediction of pence should be given to devout shepherds who are conscious of nature and nature's teachings, who are deeply conscious of the powcrthnt lies in and behind nature, \vho have the vision that they cannot express, that vision that Wordsworth received in later years. Just picture them! They are attending their iiocks on the hillside and suddenly are conscious of a wonderful presence. it is a start- ling splendor. The shepherds cower for the time being in fcar. Thcir faces lose the flush of courage and show white, but there comes to them a voice “Fear not! This is thc initiation of a great joy to humanity. The gates of the world are thrown wide open now, the message is for all ages, no longer in the revelation of the eternal shall there be known racial or geo- graphical barriers of any kind, the whole oi’ humanity is to bc \vcldcd in- to one great brotherhood. That song is still vibrating in sui`t'ering and wuit- ing souls; the glory of Bethlehem has never waned. But we ask whcrc in this present hour is the manifestation of this indwelllng peace in the Chris- tian countries of civilisation? Pne- vious to the outbreak of war these nations were armed to the very teeth." The preacher then dwelt on the point that the present war cruel as it ls, s sacritlce that is made to gratify a lust for race predominance. that the war useless as it is, is no 'travesty on the teaching ol’ the angelic choir. The message of the angels was not a pro-_ clamation of peace from sorrow of any kind; it proclaimed a peace in the deep region of the human spirit; n peace in that inner life which struck its thoughts into eternity; it peace linked unbrokcnly to the God who was rcvenlod in thc Babe of llcthlehcm.
