Long tine the neununne foe he sought, Friday, January 16, 1981, page 14 -~ gase our girls topped King's " college of Halifax 78-36 with by Mickey Place We had expected to write this column in our office but the weatherman has been most unco-operative and we find ourselves at home stornstayed. Inasmuch as that beautiful editor can be most unpleasant if this is not ready by 9.00 A.M. on Wednesdays we'll have to go without the notes we left in the desk. We trust you'll be tolerant of any inaccuracies we may perpetrate. Biggest local and recent event on campus was the invitational tournament staged in our gym by the Lady Panthers over the weekend. In the opening Sue Betts leading the way with 18 while Cathy Chandler was close behind with 16. We think the tournament offials should be very grateful to King's for filling in after St. Joseph's of Maine did not show up because they feared travelling condit- ions. In the final the Lady Panthers nosed out Acadia 55-52 in a close & exciting contest that saw the lead change 12 times & the game was not decided until Karen Rowell and Sharon Douglas scored in the closing seconds of play. Sue Betts , was again high with 18. In the consolation round St. P.X. beat Kings. Our dassels, with a 2-2 record in league play have an uphill battle to retain their divisional championship but are quite confident as they play the ' league-leading Mount A. team three more times, with two at home. Next hose game will be On Friday at 6.00 with Moncton as their opp-. opposition. We like these double-headers. In Panthex Basketball our boys managed to eke out a 76-73 win over Mount A. in I featuring: V THE ROCK I * JAN PLUS ' JAN TUESDAY NIGHT IS STUDENT THE CASCRDE LOUNGE THURSDAY NIGHT IS P.E.ISLANDER SPECIQI PRICES BOEH NIGHTS 11! ’N ROLL GROUPS Smokey Mountain Boys . This was really a TEAM‘win as Tin McGarrigle, Billy Redsond and Bruce Campbell all shared high scoring honours for the Panthers (lh's) ,while Mount A. was led by individual performances of 25 and 23..We feel that great credit should go to_. our boys for this win as they played their first league gase without Peter N°rseworthy and Chuck Whittier, around when our teas was supposed to be built. Both returned to Maine & will not be back. Next game here will be on Friday with U.N.B. coming in to play. This should be an interesting natchsup.. between teaCher_& bright pupil as our Coach Dave Nutbrown starred for U.N.B.'e Don Nelson during his college days. It would be hard to find a nicer guy thanfNelson so we wish his pleasant travelling...and' a two-game loss! In hockey we played well but lost to Mount A. G-h in their rink. With scrambled lines playing together for the first tine we fell behind n.1 in the opening period but outplayed the lountiee in the second & third. Quite unfortunately, in this league ‘they total the goals for the three periods. We hear that 'our goalie, Cudaore, played Bernie 7 BY CIMN Travelling NeWs In the Christmas tourney held last week of first semester classes, Bernie I were final contenders in both broomball and basketball. Up aginst the tough Daze Students in broom- ' ball the game went right down to the wire. The final soore at the end was 1-1, so both teams took two penalty shots; one on one. The overtime was very tense and both teams displayed talent and good sportnanship as Daze students energed the winners. - In the basketball" finals, Bernie l-and Bernie 2, the biggest rivals, took to the court. Bernie "Hepalong" Knox tallied top points as Bernie 1's Cynthia "H09" King and Sharon "Slim" Nicholson replied as well. Vince should have supplied boxing gloves to go along with the team shirts as the game was very physical. Bernie 2 slipped by Bernie l by 3 ‘ points, 19-16 the final Loses very well. When this is being read we will have play- ed Moncton on Wednesday. They are leading the Nova Bootia section of the league. That‘ is not a mistake on our part for, according to the lo cut officials that is where t e City of Monoton belongs! Our 7 next hone game will not be until 31 January when U.N.B.k will be at the Forum. Considerable attentiOn has been given in the local press to the defection, or withdr awal of players from Punther uniforms. Our own belief is that playing sport is up to the player and if he feels that participation in a sport is hurting his studies then we must respect his decision to withdraw. That an educat ion is the reason he attends university should be axiOn atic. We think this with the provisiou that he shold give plenty of warning to ehis team and coach. We are‘ not so certain when a player defects to another team but, after all Adan went for an 'apple and who knows what tenpting offers a player night get & we reserve Judgement. We can't be so charitable to the tespters. No wonder electric shavers are getting so popular. The user doesn't have to look himself in the eye every morning! Both score. Girls are reminded that second semester playdowns are scheduled ,fbr this week and you should check your tine. New faces to watch this semester are: . (l) the MacNeill Twins - Elizabeth still doesn't .have her glasses fixed but watch out, she has a nean left hook (basket- ball)! ‘ ‘ , (2) Anne Know now playin for Blanchard Hall. She will be teamedlnindth 'Tignish's finest; Sharon ; Handrahan, and Donna Gaudet. . (3) Laurie MacKinley - Daze Students finest athlete, a definite player to watCh. (4) CIMN Travelling News - you never know were they are. Catch Ya Later! 7 P.S.
