Y., and placed in the streams tributary to the Lake. It is also believed that the falling off in the catch of whitefish in Lake Vatario is due to the poisoning of the water by the dead shad. Representations will probably be made to the United states Gov- ernment respecting this matter. Seth Green, Lowever, emphatically denies that the mil lions of dead fish now floating on Lake Unta- rio are shad. He says they are a kind of fish known as alewives, but of the shad species. he shad he placed in the lake do not die. He accounts for the scarcity of whitefish by say- ing it is due to continued overfishing with pound nets and not to poisoning. iin ‘T'rayvNon, aged 27,’ two years married, and a sailor by occupation, started on his long cruise across the Atlantic Ucean, on the 6th inst , at five o'clock, from the house of | the New Haven Yacht Club, in his seventcen Uae i.
