CHRISTMAS AND EXAM CARE PACKAGES ARE COMING Information for Students from away and far far away, (that means international) and those students staying in resi- dence for the holidays. Ask your family and friends to send care packages early; we do not have campus mail during the Christmas holidays. A funny thing is happening when parcels arrive UPS. There is a whopping request for money. Last week a party gown arrived for a student by UPS. It wasn't new, but a value of $200 was put on the customs declaration. The cost was $14 GST and $23 dollars UPS brokerage fee and then the GST on the service of brokerage was $1.61. ADVICE: Ask them not to send UPS. If there is a value on the item GST has to be added. UPS charges a brokerage fee of 20 - 30 dollars to collect the GST. And then to add insult upon injury there is a GST charge for the cost of the brokerage. It is considered a service not a rip off. I spoke to Canadian Customs regarding this. UPS willnot link with any Canadian Agent so that you can act as your own broker. If you have a bonafide student visa You can claim the GST but there is a9 month waiting time on credits. Youcannot get a credit for the brokerage fee. MORE ADVICE: Document, document. Make sure that parcels come with the information that youare ona student visa, perhaps even include your number, that the items are personal or used, or a gift. BE SPECIFIC. You are allowed gifts up to $50 without Canadian duty. When Courier packages arrive Mommabear will go to great lengths to find you. I e-mail Bob Pritchett so that he can contact you by voice mail. I will e-mail you also, until arrangements can be made for pickup or delivery. L&H Yogi Looking for a one way drive to Montreal. Willing to share expenses. Would like to leave around December 16/17.
