THB COTTON COMBINE.
The Dominion Cotton Company,or as it
was than commonly called the Cotton __
Trust, was formed in 1891 with a cap`tal
of $1,500,(l)0. It included nine large cotton
mills,lJcated respectively at Hochelaga,St
Anus, Magog, Halifax, Moncton, Windsor
Brantford,and Kingston, besides a print
mill at Magog. In 1892 the stock was
“watered” almost 100 per cent, that is
$l,500,0(Il of new $111) shares was issued to
the eld shareholders at $10 per share. In
the first four years the prollta earned made
a total of $1, 770,330 or over $l(l),0(ll in ex-
cess of the actual capital-which was $1,
500,000, with the $150,000 paid for new
stock at “watering time”-$1,700,380
profits on $l,500,0iX) in four years l
Since 1895 the public have not b8el‘l‘
informed as lo the precise dividends
earned by the trust. But generally speak-
ing the stock-holders had received 6 per
cent on their stock-almost 12 per OOM
on their actual investment. In lilll the
watered stock maintained _a market
value of 100i. It has since lluctnated
downward and a few days ago I ell to 50 as
noted in our despatches at the time. The
precise cause of the collapse is not clear,
but seems to be due to manipulation. A
Montreal paper mentions that a large
floating debt had been incurred in
remodelling the mills, and that the Bank
of _Montreal insisted that dividends
should be suspended till this floating
liability had been reduced.

There was a funny article in the Toron-
to Globe the other day in reference to Sir
Wilfrid Laurier and his trip through
Canada with the Royal Party. Sir Wil-
frid appears to have had, according to the
Globe, considerable difficulty in not be-
