The Cadre, March 25, 1975, page 4 Does U.P.E.I. Offer An Education? At U.P.E.I., we have a wide variety of courses and many different fields 'of study available to us. However with the arrange- ment of courses and prerequ- isites - the course select- ion becomes limited and nar- rowed. In order to take courses outside our major or field of study, we are forced to waste mOney and time (not always available) ,in taking prerequisite cour- ses. Some courses can be. taken of course with spec- ial permission of the fac- ulty. kHOWever this usually involves who you know and who you are. ' Since degrees in today's society don't necessarily guarantee jobs upon comple— tion of University, rwhy does U.P.E.I. continue in this old fashioned trend of pre- 0 - I, requiSites. The education system at U.P.E.I. doesn't prepare individuals to live in a complex technological society but rather in a wor- ld of unreality. a To me, an education shou— ld consist of sampling a wide variety of faculties and courses from science to music with everything else in between. By the way what happened to the program of .a general concentration a— vailable to studehts six years ago? Why was this program dropped?’ I feel that general courses should be given on such topics as budgeting, family planning, nutrition, environmental control, pol- itical and educational sy- stems just to name a few. In this way students have the opportunity of receiv- ing a well rounded education. Reference material_shou- 1d be suggested or presented to students at the very be— ginning of the term. This reference material then pro— vides background information to those students without introductory courses. If questions arise pertaining to background material, stu- dents should be referred to this material, rather than waste a class period discuss- ing something which should have already been learned. However, I am not imr plying extra course loads be given to professors. There are such courses ale ready being offered now at U.P.E.I. but what still re— mains is that problem of prerequisites.- Also why doesn't U.P.E.I. take~ad— vantage of the many resource people available outside the University and offer noncredit courses on the above themes. Why.hasn't or doesn't U.P.E.I. promote or advocate the broading of horizons, instead of the limiting of them? Surely, we are not obtaining an already out- Jf date education at U.P.E. I. The time has come for U.P.E.I. to take a serious and careful look at itself torsee if it is offering its students an education or just a degree! . Some students who can't find the time for the pres- ent lab course eith— er because of prac— tice teaching ass- ignments or other course commitments might be more than willing to take the reading course it it would be offered dur- ing the summer sess- ions, _ .There are also some students who, as a result of hav- ing reaped the ben—. efits of the present reading lab course, hope to have an op— portunity to contin— ue their work & de- velopment in this area during the up- coming summer sess- ions., Such an op— By-Eleetions..... portunity would en- able those students to better prepare themselves for the _ course work they will pursue during the 75— 76 winter academic session. The reading lab course, though not a , credit course, has a— ttracted a good deal of attention on camp- Vus. Many students .who have taken the course have "spread the word" on the mer— its of the course. Recently CBCT inform- ed the community at _large of the opera- tion and objectives of the reading lab course. The course if offered during the , summer session would certainly be of great benefit to many peop- le - both full time students as well as people from the com— munity at large.
