'n'mrsclay, February 19,1981 page 14 Funeral for a friend 'by M: ckey P‘I ace It is our sad duty to report that, since our last colunn, Panther ath- letics have achieved.but. little success with one win in six attempts for a batting average of only .166. Now there's a mixed netaphor for you! In hodcey we lost a pair, two also in men's basket- ball, while the Lady Panthers split. 'Ib begin on the brighter side, our girls/beat the U. de M. 70-53, using their entire squad in tuning up for their expected layoff series. Cathy Chandler and Sharon Douglas led the way for us with 14 each. ,ch— ever, they lost 62-58 to Nbunt Allison with Cathy leading the way with 18. This was a disappointing loss and Irmentarily puts us in a point tie with the" Mounties, but with a gate in hand and that against the winless U. de M. here on Sunday, we think re— tention of the divisional championship very probably. 'Ihis content will precede the SMU Panther gane Our Basketball Panthers had a Host unhappy trip to Nova Scotia where they dropped two important ganes and were thus elimin- ated from any hope of attaining the playoffs. Against Dalhousie they were edged out 83-80 in a real heart— breaker. Billy Rednond and Vinne DiPinto were high for us with 18's. Next day, in Antigonish, the nation- ally rated St. F.X. team won quite easily by a 112—79 . score. Billy Radnond led ' our team with 21. The team closes out its season this weekend with two ganes at hone. On Friday night Dalhousie pays us a visit. 'Jhis gane will be pre- ceded by action between the final to be played in Halifax the following week. 01 Sunday afternoon Gary Heald and his St. Mary's squad will be with us and ending off with a pair of wins would be nest encouraging for this young Panther team. We feel that our basketball future is quite bright as most of this team are in their first year of inter— collegiate play and should be a contender in another year or trio. In a rather dramatic setting, the success or failure of the hockey season will probably be on the line at the Forum on Sat. night. The Panthers in- vaded New Brunswick last weekend and found the ' natives decidedly hostile. In the first game, facing UNB (a team we thought we owned after three pre- vious successes) we were huxrbled 9-2 as Mike Ready and Isrry McKennz got singles. 'Jhen, on Sunday that pesky St. 'Jhomas team blew us out of the rink 11-3 with Mike Ready netting mo and Norman Beck one. That pretty well ties up 2nd and 3rd places, but with UNB having their two garres with last place Memorial they'll have to be conceded as favourites to end up in second place. However, S.T.U. faces lst place Nbunt A. at hone on Friday night and on Saturday night the Nbunties will be with us. In the Mhopefully) unlikely event that S.T.U. wins we'll be out of it, but if Nbunt A. wins on Friday, then we MUST win or tie on Saturday for the final playoff spot which was our pre-season alrbition. Besides the gane it will be most inter- esting to watdi the two league scoring leaders in a contest against each other aseither our Norman Beck or their Ross Yates will be the 1980-81 points dianpion when the gene is over. Our team has been struggling against adversity ever since the season started and still has a good d1ance.. we hope a large crmd of students will show their appreciation of their great efforts by being on hand and giving vocal enoouragenent.
