COPENHAGEN, Aug. 19.- Via Lon-
don 12.15 p. m.-German cheers for
men in the British navy is an unusual
war time incident reported from the
North Sea by the captain and crew
of the German trawlers. Gudrun, be-
longing in Altoona, which has just
arrived at Esbjerg.
The captain, relating the experienc-
es of the trawler, said that the Gud-
run was stopped in the North Sea by
a British squadron. He promptly got
his boats ready and distributed life
belts, believing his ship was certain
to be sunk. ` _
“When the British seamen reached
the trawler the captain begged for
‘time to take to the boats, and admits
that he_ was staggered at the .short
and pointed reply: “You can take the
whole ship, we shall not harm you."
The captain adds that the British
left amid the hearty cheers of the
greatly relieved Germans. _

ROCK SLIDE IN B. C.
CALGARY, Aug. 19.- Canadian Pa-
cific Transcontinental No. 3. from
Toronto to Vancouver. crashed into
a. rock slide near Golden, B. C., early
Wednesday morning. The enginc
turned turtle and Fireman John Mc-
Lennan was killed. All the coaches
kept the track and the passengers es-
caped with a severe shaking up.
Wrecking gangs were dispatched to
tllie scene and trains are again run-

OTTAWA, August 17.- The text of
Sir Robert Borden's message of ap-
preciation of the work of the Canadian
troops at the front, addressed to Gen-
eral Alderson after the Premisr’s re-
cent visit to the firing line, has been
received here.
"The fine spirit of the Canadian div-
ision and their oflicers for the great
test in which they are engaged,” said
Sir Robert, "very deeply impressed
me. it was a great privilege to have
the opportunity of seeing them and
conveying to them from the people of
Canada a message of pride and ap-
preciation. As I said on more than
one occasion in addressing the offi-
cers and men, they can hardly realize
how intensely all Canada has been
thrilled by the tidings of their ac-
hievements. The President of the
French Republic, as well as General
Joffre and Sir John French, spoke of
the troops under your command in
terms of the highest praise. I bid you
Godspeed in the great task in which
you are engaged." _

FRENCH “PAINT THEIR WAR
HORSES “HORIZON BLUE"
TO DECEIVE THE ENEMY.
The problem of rendcriiig horses as
nearly invisible as possible On the
field of battle has been turned over
for solution by the French War De-
partment to the Society of Compara-
tive Pathology. Sessions of this
learned medical body already have
been held to discuss the matter.
Permanganate of potash has been
used to tint horses which were of a
conspicuous color. Experience now
shows that it is not satisfactory. First
of all, it is of little use unless applied
to the horse before he has shed his
hair lt further seems to be irritating
to the sliinial and probably is slightly
toxic
Veterinarians have found that, the
application of any coloring matter to
horses should be made only pftor the
oil has been washed out of the hair
with a weak ammoniated solution.
This will insure a lengthy duration of
the artificial coat.
Dr. Roeland, a recognized authority,
devised the use of picric acid for giv-
ing horses a khaki color. The acid,
an excellent antiseptic, especially ser-
viceable for burns, has proved to be
without irritating effect on the horse.
it does not give to its body the yellow
tinge which it imparts to the human
skin, but a special sorrel hue that is
very close to khaki.
1 It has been suggeyted. however. that
the sim should be o approximate the
horse's color as closely as possible to
that of the soldier’a uniform. it is
admitted that the French now have
adopted an admirable color tone for
,their troops.
All unprepared for the war, they
had been obliged to send their men
into the field in highly conspicuous
colors-dark blue tunica and red caps
and trousers. When they set them-
,selves to make the change they did it
_with thoroughness.
'The garb of the French tioops is
now of n “horizon blue," an attractive
,shade at close view and as nearly as
.possible invisible at a distance. The
_question then was how to give this
“horizon blue" tint to the horses.
Dr. Lepinsy at one of the sessions
of the Society of Comparative Patho
logy announced he had made the dis-
,covery. He gets the color by mixing
methylene blue in a special way with
tannin.
| Experiments show that it neither is
toxic nor irritating to the horse. Care
must be taken in applying it to mlm
the hairs and work it into the grain
of the horse‘s hide. The horse then

OTTAWA. Aug. 18.- The British
Government is evidently planning to
take all the surplus of the Canadian
grain crop.
The Government has received a re-
quest from the imperial authorities as
to the amount of grain which will be
available for export and what ton-
nage will be required to move it, out-
side of that which Canadian shippers
can supply-
The grain commission, grain export-
ers and shippers, have been asked to
supply estimates at once. according
to the present figures available, as to
the likely western crop. lt is expect-
ed there will be nearly 175,000,000
bushels for export. The British Gov-
ernment is evidently preparing to
.provide the tonage needed to move
Sir Robert Borden has been taking
up the matter with the home authori-
ties, and it is presumed the action of
the British Government is due to the
representations of the Canadian Pre-
mier.
Crop reports from the West all show
that the weather is magnificent
throughout the prairie provinces. The
weather is very warm and ideal for
harvest. Cutting is in full swing and
.the total crop pronilscs to be the larg-
est on record. Another wcek. or week-
and half, of warm weather is all the
West now asks.

OTTAWA, Aug 17.- Orders placed
in Canada by the Britmh Government
in reference to war supplies, and now
executed or under execution, total the
vast sum of $230,000,000, according to
an ifiicial statement issued today in
which details are given of the differ-
ent articles purchased, and their am-
ounts. The Trade and Commerce De-
partment is also collecting informa-
tion as to orders placed in the Domin-
ion by the other Allies. While it is
possible. to obtain statistics as to sup-
plied directly purchased, there is
much difficulty in coming at even ap-
proximate values in connection wltli
the large amount of’ indirect buying
done here, but the data will be collect-
edéf possible.

. According to a New York despatch
the assembling of the German Reich-
stag today is watched with interest
by the entire world of finance. An-
other huge war loan is asked by the
Imperial government, and on the
success nf this loan depends the
country’s credit and its ability to con-
tinue the war. Whether there will
be a breakdown in German finance is
lust now interesting not only the
European capitals but the friends and
foes of the Teptons in this country.
From information gleaned by New
York financial agents, it is shown that
the last German loan was successful
only because the government mobiliz-
ed savings banks, mortgage banks and
insurance companies. i-*rom Switzer-
land comes the information that these
sources of revenue are already ex-
hausted. There ls plenty of wealth in
Germany, but it is felt hy financiers
in America that the Kniser's hope
must now lie in the bigger financial
interests of Germany. To be sure,
they have been patriotic with their
aid; but it is known that many of’ the
conservative, tar-seeing German fin-
anciers must see victor" ahead and a
sure return before they will cast in
more than their sliaro. In fact, it is
believed here that only decisive mili-
tary vlctories and the signal defeat
of the enemies of Germany can bring
forth the full power of thc financial
interests of that country.
When the Reichstag assembles to-
day, lt will be aslced to give its con-
sideration to a new loan bill prepared
by thc Minister of’ Finance. it is re-
ported that. the conditions of the loan
will be the same as those of former
war loans, with thc price of thc issue
at 99. - _
A second important consideration
will bc the conferring a new and sep-
arate governmcnt on Poland. The
Kaiser and his advisors have worked
out the details of this movement, ami
it is said to have proceeded so far as
the suggestion of one of the German
princess as the ruler of’ the new Ger-
man state. Galicia would be joined
with that section of Poland captured
from Russia, and thc Poles would bc
given a more or less important part
in the government of the region. Thus
would be formed a buffer state. a pro-
tecting life-belt for the Austrians and
Germans against the tides of the hat-
ed Slavs.
Among diplomats and military
strategists. it is not bcllcvcil that thc
more taking of Warsaw will lic hailed
with any great acclaim by the Reich-
stag. lt is as_suinerl that the Minister
of War will make thc most of thc
victory and the big drive through Po-
land; in fact, it will be taken as a big
military feat. .But there is no reason
to believe that the Reichstag will con-
sider that a crowning victory. The
failure to trap thc (lzar's legions is a
disappointnientdie has suffered in the
campaign against Russia. Although
handicapped for ammunition and big
guns, the Russians madc some serious
rents in the German ailvancc. The
price the German lenders paid for
their drive to Warsaw is said to be
staggering. With perhaps equal loss-
es, the Grand Duke Nicholas has
made a masterly retreat and has brou-
ght his entire army practically in-
tact from the vlse of three of Ger-
many’s great commanders, and this
has not been achieved.

A vessel arriving last night at the
Danish island oi Funden with Rus-
sian soldiers wlio had fied from the
prisoners' camp in Schleswig.
The fugitives declared they pre-
ferrcd to expose themselves to the
risks of death rather than continue to
live in a. German prison camp. Their
appearance bore testimony to the fact
that they had been starved for a long
