Trading volume stepped up sharp- ly on the break with more than a third of the day's transactions of 980,000 shares being made in the hour before. noon. Both before and after the sharp slide, the market was quiet and prices moved narrowly. The Associated press average of 60 stocks fell 1.1 points, equaling its widest fall since Nov. 9. It stood a‘. 63.4 the lowest point since Nov. 30. The industrial component of the average dropped 1.4 points, rails were off .9 of a point, and utilities were down only .3 of a point.
