March 14,1975. The main lobby was the scene of the unveiling fo the portrait of Dr. Samuel Napier Robi ertson, B.A.,M.A.,L.L.D., 1869-1937. The portrait was‘painted by Hrs. Jadi Bibily. - It was attended by many of U.P.E.I., the provincial government and by the fam- ily and friends of thé’late ‘-Excitement at the unveiling Robertson. ’ The Hon. C. St. Clair Trainor, chairman of the Board of Governors of U.P.E.I. began the cere— Dr. monies with a short speech. He said that the Robertson Library was a milestone in the history of the devel: opment of UPEI as Kelly Memorial Library was inad- equate for the needs of the university and that the Robertson Library will serve for years and years to come. photo by G. He said that it is "fitting to do honour to those who have gone before" and that there was no difficulty in choosing a name for the' library. Dr. Samuel Robert- son has long been identified with education in P.E.I. and taught for fifty years at Prince of Wales College. In 1901 he became principal of P.W.C. and remained so until his death in 1937. The naming of the library is in recognition to such Pierce thing for the residents of Memorial Hall. ‘ ,The date for a by-elec- tion was decided for March 26th . Miss Louise Callbeck, a niece of Dr. Robertson un— veiled the portrait of her uncle which is hanging in the main lobby of the lib— rary. Catherine Callbeck, a great—niece of Dr; Robert— son addressed a few remarks to the honourable guests, acknowledging the tribute paid to Dr. Robertson in the naming of the library. She said that she was honoured to be among those who wer’ related to Dr. Robertson and hopes that the library will be "a constant remind— er of his service for fut— ure generations who will - all be touched by his leg— acy." President R.J. Baker al— so commented and welcomed _ Mr. G.D. Steel, principal of P.W.C. from 1937 to 1949 and Msgr.G.A. Mac— Donald, former president of St. Dunstans' University. The chief librarian, Mr. Meritt C. Crockett also spoke and extended a formal invitation to outside bor- rowers who, have borrowed before but because of the lack of resources could "not be formally welcomed to feel free to borrow from the library. Refreshments were then served to all guests in the smoking lounge on the second floor of the Robert- son Library.
