E 1- Mrs. Adele LcPage. who had an e Farmers Federation lit Agriculture News It is gratifying to note where the Government has accepted the rcccmmendatlon at our farm or- Earnzatioils to requisition cheese commencing May 1st to fill the British contract. The cheese slodr in Canada is said to be 34.9 million pounds. This is about 10 million pounds in excess of one year ago. Of this amount the Governmentholds al- most halt. During the fall and 1948-40 there was about 16 million pounds of Danish and New Zea- land butter imported at the re- quest of the trade. This deal is still havirrg its effect. It is diffi- cult to obtain accurate figures but. apparently there is still a consid- erable quantity of it in Oanada. 0. I. A. Statement Dr. H. H. I-lannarn. the president of the C. F. A. reports, that in a recent discussion with Mr. Gardin- er. representatives of the dairy farmers presented a proposal where the floor price of butter would be lowered 7c per pound to the con- sumers. This would provide a. sub- stantial reduction in price to con- sumers. would stimulate sales and the revolving fund of the Prices Support .Board could be used to provide a. supplementary payment to butt r producers as was done during e war. ' Such it plans would maintain the price to tile producers at the same level as during the last year. Mr. Hannam said the Govern- ment did not see fit to accept this recommendation possibly because of the outlay that might be involv- ed However. he points out that any important decline, in the purchas- ing power of farmers resulting from a continual downward trend of farm prices. while production costs remain high. might well lend to a much greater expcnditune on the part of the Government for unenl- ployment reliet than would be in- volved in any such program as suggested above The consuming public of Canada should be made fully ,-uvare oi the effect of this price reduction. if we put; it on the basis of wages returned to the farmer. the rate of retum based on we for butter is very low indeed. This is at a time when wage rates in industry are at a peak. and demands are being made for higher rates. when costs to the dairy former are not coming down. but. are going up. Fleeds. fertilizers, machinery, etc. are at the highest level for marry years and other small unnoticed costs are contin- uing to increase. What Is Being Dons-'.' In addition to watching and helping with the many small de- tails that come up l'r::.n day to day a great deal of planning and work is being done on the island this year. The advertising program for Is- land butter and cheese ill the Marltlmrs which was started last year is being expanded. Arrange- ments have been made for a cent- ral selling agency for all the sol- ids tendered to the Dairy Products Board and for all the print butter manufactured for export through our local fax-mer-owned factories. The installation of power packag- ing machines to put butler up in one-pound. prints. in preference to the old two-pound slab is necessary Several of our plants are arranging to procure or use those machines. A Provincial brand or design to be used for those one-pound prints in all the rural factories has been agreed upon. Credit for his co-op- eration and much oi the detailed work in this project goes to our local dairy superintendent. Negotiations with the Govern- ment to improve storage facilities for butter and cheese have been successful so far but. not complet- ed to date. However. it is hoped that some definite anllouliccmerrt will be made from local Govern- ment sources in the near future as to progress on this additional stor- age space. Meetings And Rallies For the last few days and dur- ing the next week or so several Farm Florum rallies and bouquets are being held. We contend that those price reductions were un- necessary. Special reports today from two western Canadian cil- ies verify this contention. They say that because of one dealer from the Island under-quoting an- other in I couple of instances on those markets the price was reduc- ed unnecessarily. Whether in view of a situation like this the Dominion Govern- ment will come across with any help to farmers which have a surplus left. it is rlifflcult to say. However. Mr. Gardiner has in- dlcated that the door is not alto- gether closed yet, especially for the smell producers that were definitely unable to dispose of I high standard and good revutoticoenelr chop.
