The earliest flowering bulbs were planted here this week, also 1-Iyacinths and Fritillana. several 1 years ago these curious plants grew in the garden and then they disappeared. Fritillaria-Guinea Hen Flower gets the name from the curiously checkered shades on stems twelve inches high. They are very effec- tive in colonies, requiring a. some- what dry situation. Fritillarias are lovely bulbcm plants for the rock garden or indoor culture. The stems are leafy and most grace- ful, with many pendent, bell-like flowers. One species found in Southern California is called ”Mission Bells" while in other places, local species are called brown or chocolate lilies. I-Iyncinths were potted up for indoor blooming, and they will be something very good l.n the win- ter time. For fmgrance and beauty in the early months of the year, the Hyacinth is the finest bulb to plant now. i white and blue. aw eet peal anew In continuing our review of the library book "The English Garden" by Dutton we read that-Evelyn, the greatest early writer on gar- dening in England describes his visit to Sir William Capelh garden at Kew in an interesting way. Sir William and his brother, Lord Es- sex were keen horticuiturista, and Evelyn was impressed at Kew by the "or-angerle and Myrtelum (which) are most. beautiful and perfectly kept." Early in the fol- lowing century this garden was taken over by Frederick. Prince of Wales, and was greatly en- larged by his widow, Princess Au- gusta. Queen Charlotte added Richmond Gardens to Kew in 1875, and Kew Gardens assumed their present form. The tradition of good gardening begun by Sir William Capel has thus been continued up to the present day, and he must be looked on u the founder of Kew u I botuinlccl nursery.
