Lobster-men Reportloss Of t Gear During Monday's Storm Lobster fishermen in the Mal- peque. Dornley, Sea View areas, with lobster traps close to shore suffered extensive damage from Monday's high winds when traps. buoys and rope were washed ashore and in some cases smashed by the boiling surf. Fisheries Officer Norman Mac- Leod said last night that it would probably take a week or more for many of the fishermen to repair their traps and get them in shape again for fishing. Much of the gear, he said, drifted away from its lo- cation. causing 'usion to fisher- men in locating their own equip- ment when it was found tater washed up on shore. Some of the smaller fishermen suffered quite extensive damage from a recent blow Mr. MacLeod stated and were just getting back to normal when Monday's storm came to further aggravate a very unhal!DY sit- uation. ' ' Damage to fishing gear which was located well outside the shore area is reported to be almost negllgable. Kinkora Area ' Teachers Urge" Royal Commission At a recent meeting in Kinkora school. the teachers of the area were unanimous in their decision that a Royal Commission is need- ed to study the problems of ed- ucatlon in this Province. Some of the suggestions which were brought forward were as fol- lows: Payments might be made to teachers at the end of each of the twelve months, or at least a pay- ment at the end of August. A let- ter. directed tlrough the proper channels, could be read at .-the annual school meeting. bringing to the attention of the ratepayers. the rfiuses in the educational sys- tern, the inconvenlen of schools and inadequacy of equipment. It was suggested that a Commission might enforce a standard require- ment in this matter. As children are often without money to buy the necessary books. Easi Prince Credit Union. Credit Union League spoke briefly on the activities of the League. At the conclusion of the meeting two films ”lGngs X" and” Forgive Us Our Debts" were shown. a Commission might look into the matter of family allowances and find out how they are being spent. Because of the shortage of teach- ers a Certificate board would of be found workable just now. but the group thought that it would be advisable for the future, and that teachers should certainly be en this board. Workshops would be very val- uable established on a local level. where teachers' problems would be discussed and results of meet- ings published. It was suggested that a panel discussion among sev- eral districts might arouse more interest on the part of ratepayers and even teachers. It was the opinion of the group that the shortage of teachers on P.E.I. is not all due to the low and poorly arranged payment of salaries, but also to the inconven- iences of boarding houses, to the lack of proper working materials. and to the disinterestedness of parents. It was also felt that if teaching is to retain the status of a prc' sion. a higher acade- mic tralnlng must be required of Normal School graduates, and higher salaries paid to compen- irate for the extra years of train- ng.
