. <n e * tli ar il P EXAMINER. THE DAILY ; JULY 22, 1890, Notes and Comments. —The air and prospects of Victoria Park are delightful at this season ; but be- fore they can be enjoyed the river Styx must be crossed. —The hay crop in New England is placed at 16 per cent. above the average In amount, and 30 per cent. above the aver- age in feeding value. —-A cynical citizen remarks that Queen Square garden would be like an oasis in the surrounding desert—if only the fountain were playing. —Professor R /bertson’s lectures should be well attended by our iarmers. Any one will know this who takes the trouble to read THE EXAMINER'S summarized report of the first lecture delivered at Kensing- ton,—though a report however full or ac- curate, cs never give the vivid idea conveyed by the living voice. Professor Robertson lectured at Eldon last evening and will lecture at New Perth this evening, at St. Peter’s on Wednesdsy at noon, at Tignish on Thursday at4 p. m., and at Charlottetown on Friday the 25thinst., at 7 p. m. —His Honor the Lieutenant Governor has kindly headed « subscription list, for the purpose of paying the debt on Queen Square fountain and setting it again in motion, with the sum of ten dollars. He has also donated a similar sum towards the Garden fund. Will not our enterprising citizens also contribute towards the foun- tain? Weare requested to state that no subscriptions were ever before received for the fountain, and that after psying the amount now required ($135) the sum of $3 or $4 annually will be quite sufficient to keep it in running order for the-future. A subscription list is open at THe EXaMINER office. ss seoro Legislative Council Election. An elector resident in the First Dis- trict of Prince County reports that the second convention called by the Liberals to nominate «a man to contest the First District at the forthcoming election, which was necessitated by the stourm raised over the result of last conventien, took place at O'Leary yesterday, when, after a long wrangle, Murphy received the largest number of votes, and was again made the nominec, amidst the same dissension as before. He says that even ths intelligew Liberals have decided that ** Joseph mast go.” A reliable correspondent informs us that Messrs. Nich Ison and Ross are meeting with grand success in their political cam- psign in the seuthern parts of the county where they have recentiy held meetings, and jadging from the enthusias‘ic recep*ion accorded them by the intellivent yeomanry of the district, they will be returned to the Legislaiive Council on the 30th inst., with handsume majorities. A gentleman writing from the Murray Harbor district reports :—Mr. William A. Poole, the Liberal Conservative Candidate for the Legislative Council, is meeting with great success in his canvas. Many promin- ent Grits are giving him their support. His election, therefere, is beyond adoubt. His opponent, Mr. Aitken, is becoming desper- ate, but it is to be hoped that he will be able tu sustain another defeat with all the grace of afailen hero. He will have an Opportunity on the eve of the 30th inst. of knowing how the independent electors ap- preciaie him as he exclaims— ** Shades of the mighty can it be, That this is ail that’s lefc of me.” A Japanese Vittiace.—The Japanese Village will open in Hulsberough Rink to- night and there isno doubt it wil have a succcessful season. The Halifax Herald thus speaks of it: The Japs closed their season at the Exhibition Rink on S»turday afternoon. The show has been a great success as regards the pubiic 4s well as the management. The attend- ance has aggregated tens of thousands and the favor with which the cunning work- men from the land of the rising sun have been received has been unqualified. The attendance on Saturday reached the big total of 4,100. At the afternoon recep- tion each child present was delighted with & present of some article of Japanese work- manship. Manager Somerby in a neat speech thanked the people, the press and the local maneger for the pleasant visi! which all had contributed to make for the company. The show opens at Charlotte- town to-morrow. caine Coxsistexcy.—Mr. McInerney was recently elected vice-president of the Liberal Associa- tion of New Brunswick He is now one of the covtestants for the vacant seat in Kent, N. B., and kvowing that Gritism is dead in that county, he, in his election card, states that ‘‘the interests of the Deminion depends upon the continued succees of the Conserva- tive party,” and that the future development, destiay, safety, aud progrees of Canada rests on the policy of Sir John A. Macdonald! !” What has the Patriot to say about this? Local Notices. Daily Arriving—Fresh Garden Strawberries My the box at Henry T.
