' * | Crops are looking well, in general, The Rev. Mr. Slackford preached his farewell sermon at Margate on Sunday last. 2 Washington Letter. THE PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN, WasHIneton, July 12, Every day, now, there are new charges that Cabinet officers dismissed their clerks or other employes because of refusal to pay volitical assessinent, bunt any charge of the kind so far has been met with full denjal. So far as such dismissals might be a matter of principle, probably those who make the complaints would, under oppesite circum- stances, be at least as guilty as those of complaint is made. As a matter of pelicy I sheuld be astonished to knew that any person would autherize such dismissals at the time. It is announced, however, on authority which seems to be unquestion- able, that the President and his Cabinet will do all they can with propriety fer Re- publican successs, and that with this end in view, the patronage of all the Department will be used as has been customary. No preliminary questien ef the campaign excited more interest here than that con- cerning Gen. Hanceck’s proposed resigna- tion of his place in the army. It may be said with certainty that all the General's eriginal friends in this expect that he will quit the army en his acceptance of the Presidential nomination. The resignation of Judge Porter, first controller of the Treasury, took eftect ‘o- day. Be will ieave this city Monday night to open his gubernatorial campaign in In- diana. Col. Robertson, of Fort Wayne, indiana, is most preminently speken of as his suecessor, now that Judge Lawrence, to whom the office was tendered, has de- clined. _ >_>. oe -+ Dr. Tanner. * The man who is giving the New Yerk dectors all the trouble is one of their own, craft, altheugh, we believe, he is net ef what is called the reguiar school. Tanner is to-day on the seventeenth day of his fast. The general opinien of the medical fraternity was that he could net hold out beyond the fifteenth. That would be the fatal day. The despatches this morning anneunce that Tanner has in reality breken his fast so far aste take water in what may be regarded as considerable ef a quantity. He drank six eunces en Monday, and has ‘“munched’”’ broken ice. Up to that time he had not in reality taken any nourish- ment beyond what might be abserbed into his system by washing his bedy, er by the rinsing of his meuth. The water se used is weighed, beth before and after its use, and the loss by absorptisn is practically noted. We dont believe that there is any raud. The watehers are very keen, and include net enly physicians, but reporters for the press who relieve each ether reguiacly. ‘‘Dr. Tanner is insane en the subject of fasting,” saida prominent New Yerk physician, and that, ne deubt, ex- plains tea great degree the way in which he has been able so far to set, apparently, at defiance the erdinary laws which affect mankind, But these laws are in Tanner is living on himself, He is gradual- ly consuming his own vitality, and is wast- ing away the tissues and fluids of his body. He may preleng this so far as to be unable “A merica. force. , te recover himself even when he, or his] attending physicians, decide t end the trial. His indomitable will has ne doubt. much te de with his maintenance ef his} fast. The Merald reporters describing. his. appearance en Sunday say: Though his bedy still presents the ap- pearance of being weil nourished, his face grows daily more cadaverous in aspect, and an eager, pleading leok that is ever present in his waking mements is semewhat pain- ful to centemplate. He exhibited more lassitude than is custemary with him on rising fer the day, and was as fidgety, querulous and irritable as might be expeci- ed under the severe mental strain he is undoubtedly undergoing. The Prince of Wales stated, at a recent meeting of the Royal Society for the Pre- vention of Cruelty to Animals, that, as the result of an efiert made by the Ladies’ Committee, 10,000 essays on ‘* Man’s duty tewards Animals” had been prepared by the children in 500 out ef the 2,500 London schools. It is a geed idea to enlist the children of the public schoels in the work. The more the duty of kindness te the lower animals is impressed upon the young, thy less will be the need for societies like the Se with a strong love of music, act and Hteva- ture. He is said to be agreat sindent of Shakspeare and to delight in the study of metaphysics. Jn inany respects he re. sembles his lamented father, the later Prince Albert, especially ingthe evenness of his temper and in his tates and the enceutage-' ment which he is disposed to give to the cultivation of the arts and sciences. The, Prince is a good speakeron public occasions, , his utterances at times being characterized’ to be the ring of genuine elequence. eo Jt isagreat p§gasure'to Canadians to have Prince Leopold, ox apy ether son or daughter of our Queen, amengst them. At the same time itis mat- ter for regret that the Prince has not been able to arrange a route through New Bruns wick en his way to England, so as to learns something more of this portion of Her, Majesty’s Deminions than he is likely to gather frem atlases. —S?, John San, eo Married Her Own Brother A well dressed and handseme lady re- cently called upon Chief Judge Neilsen, of the Breoklyn City Court, end informed him that she had something of a strange and impertant character te communicate, ‘“‘T was born of respectable and wealthy parents in Sweden,” the lady said, ‘ an¢é came te this ceuntry with an aunt when but achild. In my yeuth | had a com- panien, a bey about two years my senior, whom | was taught te regard as an erphan adepted by my parents. His name was different from ours. My mother came to America rather wnexpectedly, and called at the house. Upon being informed of my marriage and the yame ef my husband she expressed the utmost grief, and made the startling announcement that I had married my ewn brether.” Judge Neilson’s visiter was se overcome ip relating the stery that she sank back in her chair and sobbed for several minutes, She was informed by His Honer that in the sight of neither God nor man had she committed any crime. It was evidently the wish ef both, he said, that they shenld cease living as man and wife, and he weuld take the preper steps to have the marriage null and void. The lady left after thanking him in an earnest manner. The case was referred to counsel for settlement. The names of the parties are strenueusly withheld. - ae N. S. Industrial Notes. Opponents are beginning to admit a change. The Yarmouth Tribuge has come te the conclusion that the nomigratien toe our sheres is slightly in excess of the ‘‘exedus. ” The Pictou Standard says the shipments ef coal from the port of Pictou, last week, were the greatest ever known in the history of the port. There’s the “‘hum” for you. Windser is happy over an export of plaster ef 12,286 tons in excess ef the quan- tity exported up te the end of June, last year. The lumber business and the hemlock bark business are also lively in Windsor. ~-e A very painful and at the same time curio3s accident occurred to Mr. Edward ©. Haviland, a traveller for Messrs. J. G. Mackenzie & Cv., Montreal, one evening last week. at Pembroke. it seems that Mr. Haviland accompanied a irienato a drug store for the purpose ef pro- curing seme nitric acid. The druggist filied a smail vial of tie liquid for the customer, and while passing it across the counter to him, the bottle expleded, as Mr. Haviland was standing near, the entire contents of the bottle struck him in the face and head. Fortunately his eyes escaped injury, but his face and forehead were badly burned. ‘The proper remedies were at once applied and the pain somewhat alleviated, but it will probably be some time before he recovers from the wounds inflicted, His hat and coat were eaten full of holes by the powerful stuff, and his general appearance en his arrival at Arnprior en Tuesday sug- gested the idea that he had been struck by sky reckets. We trust that he will soon re cever, and never again meet with such an un- lucky mishap. nid raprior Chroniele, A Good Account. “To sum it up, six long years of bed-rid- den sickness aid suffering, costing $200 per year, total $1,200--all which was stopped by three bottles of Hop Bitters taken by my wife, who has done her own house- work for a year since, without the loss of a day, and I want everybody to know it for their benefit.” ‘““Joun Werks, dutler, N.
