This will appear to Spring is finally here, and there’s no better excuse to go out shopping for new clothes. Everybody knows that after a long, boring winter, it’s time to head out and pick up the must-have items that will keep you looking amazing. In order to find out what exactly we should be buying, I went down to Just Us Girls Fashion café at 100 Queen Street. The woman who is in the know, is Susan Roggeveen. She’s the buyer and co-owner of Just Us Girls. It’s her job, although I wish it were mine, to travel around the continent and scope out the new and upcoming trends. So, what’s hot for this season? “Tt’s all about the dresses and the skirts, ’'ve always loved them and now they’re back in a big way.” For most people, A-line skirts are the most flattering as they can give your body an appearance of an hourglass figure. You will want to look for skirts with layers of light fabrics, like cotton or eyelet. This season’s in- spiration is femininity and romance. So when choosing a skirt or dress, choose one that is not too tight that will gently blow in the wind. Just Us — Girls has ordered in a new line of skirts and dresses called Stop Staring. stunned at how beautiful she was. “T think she must have been a size 16, but she was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen, her dress just fit her beautifully.” This unique line makes a wide va- riety of dresses and skirts that range form size 0 to 2+. For a casual, everyday look, pair your skirt with layered tanks and wedge sandals or the ever popular ballet flat. The next biggest item for the spring/summer season is the trench coat. “Trenches should hit just below the knee or just above the knee.” This season, every designer is put- ting out their version of a trench coat. You'll want to perhaps invest a bit of money into this purchase as trench coats never seem to ever go out of style. To create a nice silhouette, choose trenches with either a belt or with a tailored mid section. Small details like decorative buttons, patterned seams and high slits in the back are all really popular this year, but the most important thing is finding a trench that is the perfect cut for you. Jewelry will never go out of style. Most of us can still wear pieces that our mothers wore, but for this season necklace. Whether it’s in gold, silver, or bronze pendants can really add a personal touch to an ordinary outfit. Roggeveen has also just ordered a new jewelry line called Pyrrha, that will be exclusive to Just Us Girls. “This line is really neat because all the pieces look like 19 century wax seals. They each have a different sym- bol and a different meaning.” In terms of shoes and bags this year, almost anything goes. Design- ers are starting to deviate away from the strict fashion code of match- ing shoes to purse. Shoes are being influenced by French style from the 1930's; girls with big feet should defi- nitely appreciate the rounded toe that this trend has inspired. The Fly shoe line makes great quality shoes that are always on the cutting edge of fashion. Try look- ing for shoes with great details, like buttons, or decorative stitching. Also, last year’s big trend of Greek-inspired strappy sandals is back. Again, look for the decorative touches like bead- ing or sequins. Big bags are also still in style, and I personally hope they never go out of style. When shopping for an over- sized bag, one thing to keep in mind is to steer away from large bags that add bulk to your waist. Choose a bag that hangs near your bust line. Al- most everybody can appreciate a little extra bulk in this area. Spring and summer are also the seasons when you see fashion design- ers using a lot of colour. Roggeveen says that this season’s top colours are cherry, sunflower yellow, fresh green, light and navy blue, and mocha brown. Returning from last year are the shades of khaki, army green and as always white. The last words of advice Rog- geveen gave me was in regards to the infamous ‘skinny jean.’ “They are not for everybody”. Last season, all the fashion maga- zines said that everybody could wear them, now they’re admitting that they were wrong, “Skinny jeans are only for certain people, if you have legs that go up to your ears, then wear them with pride.” For the rest of us, opt for a dark rinse jean with a straight or stovepipe leg.
