"Johnny. why do you suppose Nick walker was trying to pump me like crazy all evening. All the time I was with him. he had the neateat little questions to bring up. They were mostly about how much we know about the case. As if we know anything. That's rich!” "Yeah," aeld Johnny. "that guy puzzles me. too. But I know one thing. though. Tonight he's finally worked up enough courage to have it. out with Nancy England. ll. took him ten years but he did it." - Moe swung around on his bed. His eyes were round and very wide-awake. "Have it out with her?" "I told you I'd been working." said Johnny. He wished the heat would stop making his head spin in circles. He closed his eyes tightly e n t. opened them again, and then almost whispered. "I guess Nancy's always been in love with him." "Nick Walker?" "No. not Nick Walker." "But I thought--'' "I'm talking about Martin Smith. Irene'a husband. You know ...S-m-i-t-h...ihe one who got himself murdered. Remember?" In his interest. Moe forgot the hcat. even forgot the mosquito. He stared at Johnny Saxon. "You mean. Nancy loved Martin Smith? Her?" Johnny nodded sobertly. ”Arid Nick Walker has known it. To- night. he worked up courage en- ough to tell her off. I guess he's known all along that Nancy's been carrying the torch for Martin Smith. That's why she hasn't married Nick Walker. She doesn't. love him." Moe shook his head sadly. "Wo- men are sure funny." "Neurotic women are worse." added Johnny Saxon. ”Only she's smart. She's never pulled any of her funny stuff in front. of Nick. She's just keeping him dangling." Moe got. up off his bed very slowly. holding the wet towel around his head. He went into the bathroom. rinsed the towel out in cold water. wrapped it around his head like a turban aild came back and sat gently on the edge of the bed. ' He looked at Johnny thought- fully nnd frowned. "My." he said softly. "but this plot keeps getting thicker and thicker." CHAPTER XIV. Moe and Johnny were still eit- ting around their bedroom. It was pretty late. but the heat. was still heavy, and try as they might. no sleep would come. Facts and faces kept villlrllng around in their heads. ”Say!" Moe Martin suddenly looked interested. He was so in- terested he forgot about holding the towel around his head. It was now draped down over his face like a shroud. "I've just. thought of somethlngl Nick Walker. I'll bet. was plenty jealous or smith. That boy was mixed up with wo- men. Hannah, the cook. was telling me." "so?" Johnny lay back. closed his eyes, waited for the bed to stop whirling. "Suppose there was something between Nancy and Mertinsmith. her brother-in-law. suppose Nick Walker knew about it and also guessed that's why Nancy wouldn't. marry him. Just. suppose!" "You can take it further than that." prompted Johnny. "All right." Moe flung the sod- den towel on the floor. The Great Dane stirred. went to sleep again. 050 Nick Walker arranges that so-called accident. kills Martin smith, and thus eliminates the other love interest in Nancy's life. Now he has a clear field." ”...to Nancy's fortune." added Johnny, eyes closed as he lay flat. on his back." "Exactlyl" said Moe. "Another thing. Nick Walker knew you and Key were coming back from Nol-thport early tonight. in the speedboat. I-le's found out 'KeY'9 with you. and perhaps ehe's told you something she suspects. So he figures it's safer to kill the both of you. He'd know the boat. It ties inl" Johnny was thinking of the im- nllcatlon that had been in Nancy England's words as she angrily talked to Nick Walker on the ter- race. He again briefly reviewed the scene for his partner's ben- eflt. "How did he react?" asked 'Moe. "Not. the way you think. Be dumped the tion right back in her own lap." y "when what happened?' "He stalked oft the terrace and drove home. He was feeling med. otherwise. I don't think he would have sounded off." " ..n W" . mvnuup on his part. decided Moe.
