It is the third of a series of articles on “Education in Other Lands" written for thatjournal by Inspector McCormac. There are eleven classes of schools in Cape Colony. The average attend- ance for last four years was 74 per cent. Forty-three per cent of the school child- ren are white and 57 per cent. are colored. Host of the schools are supplied with libraries. During the last few years instructors have been ap- pointed for the purpose of improving the teaching of certain special subjects. There are now instructors of needlework ' music, drawing and woodwork, Manual training is taught in 47 schools, needle- rk in 1487 schools, drill and physical wo . training in52schools, vocal music in 771 schools and drawing in 463 schools. Fo - rty-two per cent of the teach ers hold professional certificates. Sixty one per cent of the teachers employed are females. There are six normal schools for training teachers.
