Beeure and ask for Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup. -—- —- Dovuxwosor Womexy.—A man named R. A. McKiggan, hasretnrned to Woodstoc*, Ontario, from a two weeks’ trip through Manitoba and the West. While there be visited the Doukhobor settlement, and re ports that he seaw women drawing ploughs in place of horses, It was a common sight, he saya, to see sixteen women at~ tached to aplough at work the same as oxen. The Doukhobor men, Mr. Mc- Kiggan reports, are a lazy, good-for nothing lot, sad won’t work. Instead, they have resorted to the custom of the Indiau, who, in years past, held sway over the country which the blissful Doukhobor now occupies, and let the women do the work, The men take all the comfort that’s going. Complaints are to be made to the Government, and the Canadians who live in the same vicinity are much excercised over the thing. ed A Request.—Information is required in regard to the employment and occupation of women, their numbers, remuneration, success and all sim:lar matters, the object being to submit this information to the next annual session of the National Coun- cil of Women at Hamilton, October 19, The scope of the enquiry is in regard to women in all occupations, professional, industrial, mechanical, in every way whetoer on the farm, in the office, in the machine shop or the workshop. Atyonse under whose eye this may come will copo- fer a favor by sending such informatin by letter addressed: “The Women’s Council,” P. O., Box 123, St. John. N. B. rhe epecial reason for the ecquiry is that the Women’s Council of Canada 1s about to prepare @ hand-book for the Paris Exposition, in which the information is to be made available in order to show the s:anding taken io itdustrial occupations by women in Canada.
