The IDEAL is the one engine that you need on the farm. While in see about it today. ,Stewart & ~ Co Ltd. ` i._,._|i»i1 _.sl No fowl in America today has en joyed the rapid growth the Ancona has. The Ancona was never boonled up, or sensational records supposed to arouse talk and excitement as a cheap advertisement to a breed. The Ancona has during the past few years forced its way, under trying circumstances and keen rivalry until today it is the most talked of all breeds. As Postum said. “'l`here's a reason" sure does ap- ply here and to anyone with any ln- terest on the subject. The reason will stand out prominently, “Because they lay and pay." True it is the Ancona has made no wonderful strides in the egg-laying contests, but they have held their own and, if Ancona breeders needed the advertisement and had time to spare. more Ancona pens would be in number and perhaps a different tale, when the summing up c ame round. But as time goes round, varie- ties comc and go, but thc Ancona still seems to find lnore favor. On an average a flock of Anconas will lay more eggs and prove more profitable than any other variety if properly kept and their eggs will weigh more. To some, the winning Arcmmg in some shows are hardly recognized as choice specimens of this breed. In the craze for dark colored Ancona, breeders have sacrificed every other feature und as to why this has receiv- ed so much attention over other de- sired fentures, is a matter hard to ex. plain but it is most probable that luck of exactness in the "Standard of Per- fection" has long been a stumbling block not to breeders alone, but to a majority of judges. The best part of the new standard is that the Anconu shall be Illustrated and will have a preface which will cover the origin and cllaracteristics of the breed. The Ancona Club of America have adopted a very nice ideal cut that finds favor, but to many it seems the illustration is not justice to the-breed in finess and symmetry. To find out what an Ancona really should be, the best results will be obtained away from the standard of Perfection, and in your visits to the show room, in a talk among Aucoua breeders and judges and after exam- mation of several prize winners, you begin to realize what an Ancona is or what it should be. The most seri- ous defects ore: course combs and off colored legs. The proper leg color is yellow, or yellow mottled. not dark blue, willow or any other color, Ou color legs are n serious drawback and should not be tolerated, such birds should he given the axe. The plumage of an Ancona is bluck mottled with white, the black having v Charlottetown Steam Navigation Co. The feathers should have an even V shape, while monit- lng not spangled but a neat mottle. The most serious drawback is too much white, especially in wing and tail, but the choice specimens are rap- idly overcoming these serious defects. The best Anconas are not but into the show room just as they stand. What would you think of a Barred Rock breeder, who possessed one of the finest birds in the class and be- cause he forggot to remove several dark feathers, he would have to be passed. Une of our best judges stat- ed: “lt's no use paying high express rates on feathers that should he left at home." Before exhibiting your An- conas look them well over and remove any off color t‘eathers,- foreign color, or those with Loo large niottling. You will improve on your chance of winning. There is no harm in this and we are certain nearly every class need the same remedy. Anconas are not meant to be too dark and the quicker you get your idea away from this the better A darker bird than an exhibition breed may be needed occasionally in the breeding pen, but it should never be exhibited. The Ancona breeder is wide awake and has his eyes and ears open lor anything as u betterment to the breed. Investigate the Ancona and you will form your opinion like thousands of others, “The most beautiful fowl of all. The greatest. layers and the big- est payers.”~'l‘. J. O’Rourke, in “Can- adian Poultry News. THE "BABY" SlL0. I have proved by four years' experi- ence that a “baby” silo of from 40 to 44 inches in diameter is practical for the farmer with a small herd of four or five head of cattle.
