The recent riots in Cincinnati have had the effect of directing the attention of the American press and people to the possibility of their, repetition in other large cities, east as well as It eppear that even cultured west. w ould Boston is not without the elements that go to make up a vicious and danger- ous mob. Says a writer in the 7ravel- le i — , “If any one doubts thatthe lawless and casion offers, let him read the news in the morning newspaper every day, as well as the daily proceedings in the criminal courts, Searcely a night passes without assaults on officers by | roughs and street bandits, who are| lying in wait for victims to plunder. | A few evenings sinee a police sergeant | while attempting to take a drunkard to the station house, was set upon in a populous part of the city by three roughs, whose attack was so sudden and unexpected, that he was knocked down and nearly killed by kicks from the heavy boots of his assailants, before assistance arrived. It has long since been a delicate and dangerous work on the part of the police, to arrest wreng- doers in certain quarters of the city, without creating an extended popular disturbaace, more especially on a Sun- day or holiday afterneon. Experiene- ed officers who have attempted it, say that the city has been on the eve of a bloody riot any time in these last few years, which would require ail the police reserve, if not the military, to quell. In this connection,it is not improper to state that General Nat Wales and staff, with several of the tield officers of the First Brigade (Genera! Wale’s command), have been studying the strategical points of the city for some months past, with a view to the prompt suppression of any riot which should get beyond the control of the civil authorities. Under these circum- stances we may rest assure of one thing, namely, should such an event happen there willbe no such bungling as at Cincinnati. The Massachusetts militia will be ably handled by experienced aod resolute soldiers tor its commanding officers. Herring and Potatoes. About six months ago, when it was discovered that the produce of cereals throughout the world was much less io 1883 than in the preceding year, there was a good deal of speculation as to the probable course of prices, and the opinion scemed to be pretty general that they could not decline much more, while there was every likelihood of a consider- able advance. Six months ago the price of No, 2 spring wheatin Chicago was ninety-five cents per bushel, which is generally considered a moderate rate, but instead of advancing it has eontinu- ed to decline until the very low price OI seventy-seven cents was reached, 4 reduction of eighteen cents per bushel in six months, in the face of & compara- ney light production. All this time the British markets continued in a con- gested state, although the imports were leds than usual, and political economists were for some time at a loss to account for the seemingly decreased consump- tion of food in the British Isles ; but the cause was found to arise chiefly from the fact that the potato crop of Furope was unusvally large last year and the quality much above the average, while the fisheries were also wonderfully productive. In many of the cities and towns in Britain, potatoes of good quality are being sold at thirty shillings a ton,or less than twenty cents a busbel, 80 the economic British laborer ean buy six pounds of mealy potatoes for a penny and six herring for two-pence, and he and his family can live well without incurring much expense for flour, meal or meat. The potato crop in the United States last season was also uaustally large and of superior quality, and has helped greatly todiminish the censumption of flour and mea) on this side of the Atlantic. ——8 6 Special Notices. eo Witt friends who have not been personally solicited for contributions to the tea, in aid of the P.
