A FAITHFUL PUBLIC COURSE.
There was something quite pleasingly
unique in the leave-taking of Sir Louis
Davies as at two public gatherings dur~
ing last week he announced to hundreds
. of his supporters his intended retire-
ment from the political arena. It was
creditable alike to his head and his heart
that be _took this method of severing his
political relations. Too often the politi-
cian retires on the first favorable chance
tosome omce of emolument with little
thought or care for the men who have
' supported him for years and perhaps
made him what heis. Sir Louis Dxvies
is of a different stamp. The bend between
him and his constituents has been cem-
ented by thirty years of able and bril-
liant service on his part, and by admi-
ration, love and uushaken ddellty on
their part. Their relations are now to
severed with mutual regard and esteem.
All must feel that on the political side
tberetirement of Sir Louis Davies is a
public loss-a loss to the party of which
hehss so long been one of the most re-
sourceful leaders,a loss to Parliament of
which he has been so long a distinguish-
ed ornament and one of the foremost, de-
baters, a loss to his constituency which
cannot hope to replace him with another
equally brilliant and able, and a. loss to
the entire Province of which he has been
the tireless. able and sucessful champion.
At the picnic on Saturday, where the re~
tiring Minister was compelled to listen to
many flattering eulogies, one speaker re-
marked tbet SirLouis Davies had done more
for Prince Ed ward Island than any man.
now living, and more than any other man
had ever done. This Statement, so heart-
ily applauded at Kingston, sounds a very
sweeping one until we seek for the man
living or dead for whom a like claim
might be set up. Where can he be found?
And of what living mm in any other -Pro-
vince can the like ba said in regard to°’his
services to his own Province?
It is clear that very few of the public
men of all Canada have been endowed
with such qualifications to win and re-
tain the favor of the people. l\o one of
the public men of Prince Edward Island
was ever called to deal with such wide
and varied interests at home and abroad,
in Ottawa, Lontion and Washington, and
in each and all of these Sir Louis has
acquitted himself with credit. We doubt
not thd- in the new arena he is now
lo enter and the new and lniportanti
duties he is shortly to undertake he will
acquit himself equally well and render
1 qually valuable service. Thejudiclary of
Canada and of the Empire has long been
the pride of all British subjects. Its
functions are of the first importance in
he maintenance of justice, of social order
and the rights of our common citzenship.
Sir Louis’ line talents, legal learning
and experience well qualify him for
aseat in our highest Court. He will
enter it while yet in the prime of life and
the fulness of his fame. He will give
to his native Island her first represent-
.tion in that august body, and no one
 loubte that he will bea just and 'im-
partial judge who will ever maintain
he purity ofthe ermine and the high
character of the Canadian judiciary.
