Business Manager “Ii IllI‘“‘Ii_llll‘_ll MONDAY, FEB. ll. 1901. TUBERCULOSIS CONFERENCE. health olliecrs and all others interested has been called by Lord Minto to con- sider the question of tuberculosis, and all that pertains to its prevention and cure. As the meeting will open on the 14th iinstunt at Ottawa there will be but little time for deliberation before the delegates must be on their way. \Ve understand ' that medical practitioners in this city and on the Island, in common with members of the profession throughout- the Domin- ion have been invited to attend. We think both the Provincial and City Governments might well give immediate attention to this matter and ought both it to be represented. The ravages of tuber~ 'culous disease are simply appalling throughout the world and our fair Island yearly contributes alsrife quota to the number of victiins. On the continent of Europe, in the British Isles, in the Unite-l States and elsewhere the `. "white plague" as it is frequently called, has engaged the attention of the foremost Imedical and scientific authorities; great I . . . I Congresses have been called to discuss it and much progress has been made toward ascertaining the character of the disease, how it; originates and is spread, and some ofthe ways in which its ravages may be curtailed. Science has settled the fact that tuber- culosis, including its best known form of consumption of the lungs, is an infectious disease; that the germ which imparts it to the human subject may be conveyed in the dust of the air from the dried sputum of a consumptive patient, er from eating the insufficiently cooked flesh of a. tubcrculous animal, or from drinking the milk of a cow infected with tuberculosis. Knowing _ this much the necessity becomes apparent for the isolation of consuinptive' patients, for special hospitals or sanitorizi in healthful localities for their care and cure, and for great precautions to prevent the spread of the malady from diseased to healthy persons. _ Canada has been turdy in taking action, and especially have the Governmental authorities. federal, provincial and civic been neglectful of the vast: interests involved. We get almost into panic if smallpox or cholera threatens us and all the energies of government and the health boards are quickly put forth at such times; yet consumption sweeps into the gmve in a single year more Canadian victims than smallpox or cholera has slain within a century. Yet a small beginning has been made toward dealing with the malady. Ontario ani Quebec mei-|T's 'DISEASE ls the deadliest and most painful malady to which mankind is subject.
