CONVENTION AT CARDIGAN.-The
Liberal Conservative Coventlon held
at Cardigan, Saturday for the purpose
of nominating candidates for the
2nd District of Kings, was largely at-
tended. The proceedlngs were opened
by Mr. D. Morson, the Convensr,
calling on thq present repriesetntaf
tives for an account of their steward-
ship. Mr. J. A. Dewar responded in
a brief speech, setting forth his
efforts on behalf of the District, in
respect to a public works and other
matters. During his term of four
years he had missed but two sittings
of the House, and in this, and other
respects, had given to the affairs of
.the country his closest attention. If
his conduct as a representative had
not been satisfactory, the opportun-
ity was now open for anyone to call
it in question, and he was willing to
give any explanation that might he
required of him. The Hon. John
A. McDonald followed in a somewhat
extended review of the acts of the
administration, whose pre’-election
promises had, he claimed, been fully
implemented. The platform on which
they made their appeal io the people,
had, both in whole and ln part, been
successfully carried into effect. Com-
ing to n detailed analysis of the fin-
ancial sltuatlon, he showed how,
while the public service had been ini-
proved in all its branches, a substan-
tial reduction had been made in the
pubic indebtedness of the Provlcne,
deficits replaced by surpluses, while
thc amount of interest payable year-
ly, which is the true measures of the
debt, had been greatly reduced. The
followipg resolution moved by Mr.
Martin McKinnon, seconded by Mr.
John Curran, was then put, and car-
ried enthusiastically. Resolved, That
we, the delegates representing the,
Conservatives of the Cardigan District
having met this day in convention,
hereby express our beartlest approval
of the present overnment in its ad-
ministration of the affairs of this
Province, and our unwavering confi-
dence in the lion. John A. Mathie-
son as lender of the Government, and
Further Resolved, That we likewise
express our confidence in Sir Robert
L.Bordeii, as Premier of the Dominion
of Canada. On nomination of candi-
dates being called, lt was moved by
Mr. Patrick Welsh, seconded by
Messrs. John J. Welsh and Leonard
Wood, that Mr. John A. Dewar be‘
nominated for Assemblyman. Mr.
James Duncan, was then moved by
Mr. Alexander McLean and
seconded by Mr. Alex. Acorn. On a
ballot being taken Mr. Dewar was
declared nominated, and on motion
of Mr. Duncan, tho nomination was
made unanimous. For'Couricilman,
Hon. John A. McDonald was moved
by Mr. Peter McKenna, and seconded
by Mr. M. J. Welsh, ami unanimous-
ly chosen after which the convention
adjourned.

for the marked improvements in the
school during the past year, The

classes in the various subjects now
taught in our public schools. The
accurate and unhesltating manner in
which' the pupils responded to the nu-
merous questions propounded by
their somewhat severe examiners re-
vealed to the visitors that excellent
work had been done during the past
year and that the pupils under the
tutorshlp of Miss Margaret Murphy
had attained a high state of eillciency
in the various branches they had pur-
sued. The knowledge which the
more advanced pupils showed of those
practical mathematical problems, so
essential to the man of today, was re-
markable indeed and justly merited
the commendation of all present. Too-
wards the close of the examlnatlonn
Miss Murphy presented a number of
prizes to the most deservliig pupils of
the several classes and took occasion
to review the work of the past year,
pointing out as she went along where
much more could be accomplished ii'
the parents would take more interest`
in the school and the education of
their children. At the close of the
meeting many of the visitors express-
ed themselves as being highly pleas-
ed wltli the examination and compli-
mented the teacher on the methodical
manner in which the pupils perform-
their work.

LONDON, July 11.-Iii a strongly
worded article on tho Ordinance
Department, Reynold’s Newspaper
asserts that Lord Haldanc's address
at the National Liberal Club was ln-
tended to be an anti-Lloyd George
utterance and that there has been a
cabal against the Minister of Muni-
tloiis ever since his appointment,
inspired by men who were compelled
to leave the Government and others
who remained. The paper declares
that Haldane was to blame. not only
for the jaundlced version given of the
Cabinet proceedings, but also for the
manner in which he held a pistol to
the head of Lloyd George and dared
him to dismiss General Von Donop.
When the time comes, the article con-
tinues, Lord Haldane will rcaliso that
he has not a. monopoly of disclosures.

MISS MARGARET G. CRAWFORD.
There passed peacefully away at
Wood islands North, on Saturday mor.
ning June 26th. of heart trouble after
an illness of thrco years, borne with
Christian fortitude, Miss Margaret
Grace Crawford, Teacher. She was
respected and beloved by parents and
pupils in all the districts where she
so faithfully and efficiently taught
those under her care. Their sympathy
and respect was shown by the very
large funeral on Monday the 28th. fr-
om the home of her father, Mr. Dun-
can Crawford. The service was cond-
ucted by the Rev. Mr. Gillis, assisted
by Rev. Mr. Sutherland of Murray
l-larbor North. She leaves to mourn
her father and mother, a brother and
sister, besides ii. lurge circle of friends.

MR. HECTOR STUART.
After an illness extending over mn-
iiy years, llector Stuart of Springton
passed peacefully to his cternnl rcst
on Thursday, July lst, at the nge of
78 years. The deceased was a member
of the Presbyterian Church, Hartsville
and bore his long illness with Christ-
ian patience and resignation. He lea-
ves to mourn the loss of a kind and
affectionate husband and father, it
sorrowlng widow and seven children.

service held on Friday July 2nd. was
conducted by the Rev. J, H. Mcllnttie,
Brookfield, the remains being laid to
rest in Sprlngton Cemetery. The sym-
pathy of the community is extended
to the family in their bereavement.

With the dawn of July lst, the spirit
of Pati\`ck Cavauagh, New Haven,
passed to the great beyond, to meet its
all merciful judge, after a well spcn
life of 67 years. The late Mr. Cav-
anagh was one of the best known and
most respected members of the com-
munity in which he lived. always ad-
mired for his honesty and sobriety.
