Old meadows were badly winter-killed, but we have had a phenomenally wet spring up to July Sth, and it brought the grass along finely, considering the pros- pect in May. New meacows unhurt, and are & grand crop all through the Province, The various grain croj@ never promised better at this date on all high, dry land, but a great many fields of low to flat land will be from a partial to & total failure. Winter wheat is not grown on the Island. Root crops have done grandly the last fortnight and promise well, The epring was very hard on the corn crop; a great deal missed all over, owing to wet and cold, but the outlook is all right for those who sowed thick, for where thick enough it looks fine, having made great growth in the last two weeks. Fruit of all] kinde will be a short crop.” escaped — Prince Edward Island lllus- trated is for sale at all the Bookstores, Priee 25. MR- CARLETON’S LEC TURE. An intelligent and appreciative audience assembled in St. Patrick’s Hall last even- ing to hear Mr. John L. Carleton, barrister- at-law, St. John, lecture on “Boyle O'Reilly, the Poet of Humanity.” The lecture was delivered under the auspices of the Benevolent Irish Society, and Mr. Peter McCourt, the President of that organization, presided and introduced the lecturer in a complimentary speech. Mr. Carleton’s treatment of his aubject was excellenc in every respect, ani everyone present was delighted. Afier touching briefly upon the early life of O'Reilly, Mr. Carleton took vo the }Oet-journalist’s career in the United States, and pointe! his narrative by quct- ing extensively from his writings. The discourse was highly eulogistic of the clever writings and praiseworthy motives of {this talented son of Erin, and the extracts from his prose and pgetry so eloquently and ably given by the learned lecturer were roundly applauded. Che vote of thanks atthe close was moved by ex-Councillor Byrneand seconded by Mr. J. E. B. McCready. Mr. Carleton replied in fitting terms, ° SHIP NEWS. Port of Charlottetown, ENTERED.
