Te RIS RECENT EXPERIENCES AT VARIOUS PLACES IN THE CAPITAL. About a week ago ths young Duke of | Newcastle arrived at Washington, register: | ed at Wormley’s as ‘“‘Newcastle, London, England,” and was assigned an upper room. | When his rank was ascertained he was ac corded finer quarters. Since his arrival he has been about the city considerably, in 4) quiet way, but has escaped notoriety. On| Sunday he presented himself alone at St. | John’s Church, where the elife worship | since the President selected it as his regular | church. itis small and all the pews are taken, so the unknown and boyish duke was requested to wait in the vestibule until the pew-holders were seated, and final: | ly informed that he could not be accommo | | | dated. He then went away to the Epiph any. ‘The nobility loving attendants at St John’s are terribly cut up at losing the pre sence of a “‘real duke” from their services, | and are wondering that their usher should have been so cbtuse as not to recognize “quality,” even though unescorted and rather plainly dressed. | anil jane | The many rumours lately set afloat as to | the successful application of a new motive | foree will, it is said, soon receive confirma- tion by a public experiment, in which the | newly-discovered agent will be tested, or be} laced in the list of hambugs. The Keely Motor Company met recently, when Wil-! liam Bockel, an expert appointed by the | Court to receive from Keely the secret of his discovery, laid before them the plans | and explained the nature of a new motor | and the physical laws taken advantage of in deriving the new foree. He claimed that Mr. Keely had discovered that water in its | ordinary state may be disintegrated by vib- | ratory action, its molecular structure sun | dering and producing a permanent expan- | sive gas, vapour, or ether, and that this re- | sult can be obtained by mechanical action. | Mr. Keely, brietly addressing the Company peomised that a new engine of 500 horse- power, would soon be ready for trial. In| the meantime the Pennsylvania Railway Company are being consulted, and will probably allow Mr. Keely to make the firet public test of his motor on their line between New York and Philadelphia. Mr. | Bockel, the expert appointed, is an enthus- | iastic believer in the motor, and the stock- | holders have passed resolutions declaring their full confidence in Mr. Keely and his motor. The advent of a new force will be an era in the history of practical mechanics, but in such an are of invention and dis- covery as the present, people will hardly ever be surprised. -_- — A despatch frem Beeton, Ontario, oil wells says: ‘‘Last night, while three men were working at a drill, the large sinker and drill, weighing over 12,000 pounds, were suddenly ejected from the hole, about 200 feet deep and followed by a shower of stones and gravel; then a stream of water six inches in diameter rushed from the pipe, and this stream has been flowing steadily ever since. This morning, while a man wae lighting his pipe in the derrick, the gas bubbling out with the water caught fire and continues to burn, the water and gas falling in a fiery cascade, and making one of the most’magnificent sights ever seen in this country. — ——_- ——+- The Great French Remedy, Dr. LeDuc’s Periodical Pills. —_———— ' For ihe cure of Leucorrhbea or White's Excessive or = ew, Menstruation, Green Sickness, Falling of the fomb, Catarrh of the Uterus or Vagnia, Hysteria, Pain in the Back, or Piles, or for the puepose of in- vigorating and giving tone to the Generative Organs, two pilis should be taken twice daily, or in very en- febled conditions, one pill three times aday, To effect cures in chronic cases it will be neeessary to continue the use of the remedy for some months.
