C0. ` l WITNESS OP GOD Possessed the Barbarians THEY SHOWEI) KINDNESS Love, Which God is. Thus ' Manifesting Proves its Divinity. In this discourse Dr. Talmage com- lmends the spirit of amity and good"feel- ing and mentions illustrious examples of that spirit; text, Acts xxviii, 2. “The barbarous people showing us no little kindness.” Herewe areon the Island of Malta, another name for Mellta. This Island, |which has 'always been an important commercial centre, belonging at ditferent Itimes to Phoenicia, to Greece, to Rome, to Arabia, to Spain, to France, now be~ longs to England. The area of the island is about 100 square miles. It is in the Mediterranean Sea and of such clariry of atmosphere that Mount ’ Aetna, 130 milrs away, can be distinctly ' seen. The island is gloriously memorable because the Knightsof Malta fora long while ruled there, but most famous because of the apostolic shipwreck. The bestormed vessel on which Paul sailed had “laid to” on the starboard tack, and the wind was blow- ing east-northeast, and the vessel drifting probably and a half an hour, she struck at what is now called St. Paul’s bay. Practicaly sailors have taken up the Bible account and decided beyond con- troversy the place of the shipwreck. But the island, which has so rough a coast, is for the most part a garden. Richest fruits and a profusion of honey character- ized it in Paul’s time as well as now. The finest oranges. figs and olives grow there. When Paul and his comrades crawled up on the beach, saturated and hungry from long abstinence from food and chilled to the bone, the isianders, though called barbarians because they could not speak Greek, opened their doors to the shir- wrecked unfortunates. Everything had gone to the bottom of the deep, andthe barefooted, bareheaded apostle and hips’ crew were in a condition to appreciate hospitality. My text llnds the ship's crew ashore on Malta an'-l around a hot fire drying them- selves and with the best provision tie islanders can offer them. And they go into Government quarters for three days to recuperate, Publius, the ruler, inviting them, although he had severe sickness in the house at the time, his father down with a dangerous illness. Yea, for three months they staid on the island watching for aship and putting the hospitalities of the islanders to a severe test. But it en- dured the test satisfactorily, and it is recorded for all the ages of time and eter- nity to read and hear in regard to tie inhabitants of Malta, “The barbarous people showed us no little kindness. Kindness l What a great word that is! It would take areed as longas that which the apocalyptic angel used to measure heaven to tell the length, the breadth, the height of that manificent word. It is a favorite Bible word. and it is early launched in the book of Genesis, caught up in the book of Joshua, embraced in the . book of Ruth, sworn by in the book of Samuel, crowned in the book of Psalms and enthroned in many . places in the New Testament. I Kind- loess! A wori no more gentle _ than mighty, I expect it will wrestle me down before I get through with it. It is strong enough to throw an archangel. But it will be well for us to stand around it and warm ourselves by its glow as Paul and his fellow voyagers stood around the fire on the Island of Malta, where the 1'NPS A _(_ Maltese made themselves immortal in my -T0- . It does away washboard ' and does not clothes or hand; if I vvortnmw but more ot us have again and again in some awful stress of life had either from earth or heaven hands stretched out which "showed us no little kindness.” There is kindness of disposition, kind- ness of word, kindness of uct, and there is Jesus Christ, the impersonation of all of them. Kindness? You cannot aiYect it. You cannot play it as a part. You cannot enact it. By the grace of God you must have it inside you, an everlasting summer B. Hittites and Jebusites must quit forever- every man Well, every woman well, every child well, every bird well, every horse Well, every dog well, every cat well. Give this spirit full swing, and you would hav no more need of societies for prevention of cruelty to animals, no more need of pro tective sewing woman’s associations, and it would dull every sword until it would not cut skin deep, and unwheel everv battery till it could not roll, and make gunpcwder of no more use in the world except for rock blasting or pyrotechnic celebration. Kindness is a spirit divinely implanted and in answer to praysr,_`aud then to be sedulously cultivated until it illls all the nature with a_ perfume richer and more pungent than mignouettc, and, as if you put a tuftcf that aromatic beauty behind the clock on the mantel or in some corner where nobody can see it, you Bud people walking about your room looking “What are you looking tori” and they answer, “Where is that flower?" so if one has in his soul this infinite sweetnessof disposition its perfume' will whelm every- _ thing. ' . Lot us all pray for the spirit of kind- ness. It will settle a thousand questions. It will change the phase of everything. It will mellow through and through our entire nature. It will transform alife- time. It is not a feeling got up for occasions, but perennial. That is the, reason I like petuuias better than morn_ ing glories. No man can be stronger than his stomach. The careless and irregular eating, of business men, causes disease of the stomach and its allied organs of digestion and nutrition. There can be no sound health until these diseases are cured. Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery cures diseases of the stomach and other organs of digestion and nutrition, and enables the body to be built up into vig- orous health by the assimilation of the nutrition extracted from food.
