STERLING (Cereal Breeding) The oat crop is the most im- portant cereal grain produced on! ennually in pure or mixed stands. There are two oat production problems which affect virtually every grower in the Province. Septoria disease of oats attacks all fields to some extent since apores of the organism are wide- e@pread and all varieties of cul- tivated vats are susceptible. The second problem, lodging, is in- fluenced greatly by precipitation, winds and fertility practices. Bar- ly seeding at rates not exceed- fing three bushels per acre, and the moderate use of nitrogenous fertilizers offer some measure of lodging control. Cerealists at the Experimental Farm, Charlottetown, are giving major attention to these two im- gmortant problems. Oat varieties from all parts of the world are theing evaluated for their reac- tion to both lodging and‘ Septoria disease. Several good parental stocks have been located for use fn the breeding of lodging resis- tant varieties and several hybrid lines show considerable promise. High resistance to Septoria has theen difficult to locate, primar- ily due perhaps to the absence of tisfactory testing techniques. ever, through the combined cael og! in Eastern Canadg, ments are being made in of testing breeding | We fully understand the needs of our farming — A Store ee 4 RIGHT IN YOUR OWN HOME ! with a Firestone FREEZER ee!
