Robertson, both of the Post Otlice Department this city, auntie Two sad fatalities oecurred at Ottawa on Sunday night. The nine-year-old son of Mrs. Simms, an attache of the House of Commons, was playing on the edge of the canal and fell in. Before help could be secured the little fellow was drowned. A boy named Thomas McFarlane was driving along Sparks Street when a dog bit the horse and the animal ran away. Young McFarlane was shaken off the wagon but still-held the reins. He was kick- ed by the horse and killed instantly. a Mas. Sims, widow of the late George Sims, of Plymouth, N. S., a lady of eighty-five years of age, according to the Yarmouth Times, displayed remarkable presence of mind afew nights ago. She was all alone in her house, when she heard sume one trying to force an entrance through a window. Failing in his attempt, he went to the door, which was fastened, and shouted that he wanted some matches. Mrs. Sims got the matches aud went to the door, but as she was in the act of opening it he forced his way in and took hold of her. Toronto, May 17. William O’Brien and Dennis Kilbride arrived here this evening There were over ove thousand people at the station. The visitors were greeted with cheers mingled with croaus. At the Rosin House a large crowd assembled, and when O’Brien made his given for O’Brien. presented Mr. O’Brien with a complimen- tary address on behalf of the Lrish nation- alists of the city of Toronto, to which Mr. O’Brien made a short reply. In the after- noon a monster meeting of 15,000 people was held in the Queen's Park, which wasaddressed by O'Brien and Kilbride. The meeting was the most uproarious ever held in Toronto, and the attempt by both gentlemen to make connected speeches utterly failed. An organized disturbance took place and there were several hand to hand encoun- ters. — Debate on the Budget. Panis, May 17. In a debate on the budget to-night M. Rovier said the committee could not creased taxation and expenditures. The Government desired to balance the bud- get. Premier Goblet said, ‘if ever by fresh taxation.” He reproached the committe with demanding forms which it knew to be impracticable. The Chamber, by a vote of 275 to 259 rejected the proposal of the Government,and the Cabinet then resigned. The New Tariff. Orrawa, May 17.
