Soccer Panthers The theme for this year’s UPEI Soccer Pan- thers is youth. The average ~ age for this year’s team is 20 years of age, three years younger than last year’s squad. This indicates that there is a lot of experiance gone from last year’s team. Gone are vetern stars Alan Spink, who played = soc- cer this past summer with Ottawa of the Canadian Soccer League, Glen Smi- ley, and goalkeeper Trent Hayes. In fact there up to twelve people missing from last year’s team which was upset in the AUAA Playoffs by St. Mary’s. This year’s squad con- sists of many first year play- ers. A couple of upcoming stars are Paulo Lombardi, a midfielder from Montreal, and Scott Ferrell, also a midfielder from Moncton. However don’t jump to con- clusions that this year’s team will be a flop as a number of key veterans New focus for physica! activity “Participation” is the focus of the new Fitness. Intramural, and Recreation program here at UPEI: The program is being planned so that students will have the opportunity to pactici- pate in a variety of fitness, ~ recreation, and intramural activities. Built into the program will be the option of selecting recreation/pick up activities in place of or in conjunction with sched- uled competitive activities. The events will be sched- uled at various times of the day so that students can build programs that meet their needs, interests, and timetables. Equipment for pick up activities such as_ basket- ball, volleyball, tennis, bad- minton, or softball can be signed out with a valid stu- dent card from the Ath- letic Department or Con- trol Room in the Gymna- sium. on Mon-Fri Mon-Thurs Fri Sat Sun campus Equipment Hours: 8:30am - 4:00pm - Main Office Gym 4:00pm 4:00pm 1:00pm 1:00pm 6:30pm - 8:00pm - Control Room Gym - 6:00pm - Control Room Gym - 4:00pm - Control Room Gym 4:00pm - Control Room Gym - 9:30pm - Control Room Gym w eDARTS by Darrel Cole Such vet- erans include team leader Richard-Pierre Giles, Mike Blanchard, etc... When asked his feel- ings on how the Panthers will do this year Coach Andy Cameron was very optimistic even though the team has losi a few quality players. Coach Cameron told me at an interview last Thursday afternoon that are returning. they will take the season one game at a time and shoot to make the _ play- offs where anything happen. Coach Cameron admitted that there will be mistakes, but he said, “we will learn from them.” Janos Barna, a second year player and Business Stu- dent, also seemed very op- can timistic about the season — and accepted the challenge that this year will be much tougher for the Panthers to win back their AUAA Soc- cer Crown. The Panthers main competition for the playoffs this year in their division will be The Univer. sity Of New Brunswick Red Raiders and The Memo. rial Beothuks of Newfound. land. These two teams have lost very few players from last year when they won the AUAA Championship in Antigonish, Nova Scotia The rivalry should continue this year between these twa teams. In the other divi sion which consists of Nova Scotia teams, Acadia Uni versity Axemen, and The St.Mary’s Huskies will have to be watched while power house St.. F.X., like UPE has lost the majority o their team. It’s going to be an ex citing year for our Socce Panthers, and I would lik to wish them luck. Th Panthers will be looking fo your support out there o the field game in and gam out.
