Oyster Planting Seeks To Overcome Disease Problem OTTAWA (C) A 8200.000. three-year oyster-restoration pro- gram in selected areas of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick is an experiment to determine whether s disease which has destroyed the msiei-s in the last two years can b: overcome. a fisheries depart- ment official said Friday. '3We are going to try to de- velop a disease-resistant strain but we don't know if it will work." he added. That was why only the ship- pegan area of New Brunswick and the Malagash and Wallace areas of Nova Scoiia had been chosen for the first seedlngs with dis-I case-resistant Prince Edward Is- iand oysters. it is hoped these oysters Will use on their disease- reslstant qualities to succeeding generations. "We just can't go dumping oy- sters all over the place until we know if the experiment is going to succeed." the official said. Depletion of the beds was brought about by a disease known as malpeque which attacked oy- sters in P.E.l. waters from 1915 to I920. The P.E.l. oysters to be used for the seeding experiment now are resistant to malpeque, Biologists will plant 1.000 bar. rels in fishing areas and private oysters farms in the Shlppegan area of New Brunswick. The fisheries depart- ment now is investigating to de- termine steps to rehabilitate the oyster beds. f Century Old Alberton Business Changed Hands During Week it was made known Thursday evening that the long established business of Myricks Alberton Ltd. has been acquired by the Purdy and Henderson Co.. Ltd., of Mon- treal. The announcement was made by J H. Myrick at an informal dinner held in Bud's Restaurant. Present at the dinner were W. M. Fraser. president of Purity and Henderson. and the company's treasurer. E. A. Bratten: George Gibson. re- cently appointed general manager of Hutt Bros; Mayor H. E. Bar- bour. and a small number of prom- inent Aiberton citizens and busi- HESS men. lilyricks Alberton Ltd., original- ly Hall and Myrick. was establish ed by Mr. Myrick's grandfather J. H. Myrick, about a century ago and was first located at Alberton South. The business consisted ofe general store located at the corn- er of Main and Church streets.
