All the colleges' for women in Kan-
sas were canvassedon the question.
"What le your description of the ideal
man?" This is what the male being
should be like in order to meet the
requirements of the girl graduates:
Height. 5 feet 11 inches.
Weight, 159 pounds.
Chest, 40 inches expanded, 34 inches
contracted.
Waist, 30% inches,
Must make a good appearance, but
need not be handsome,
Must be careful of his personal ap-
pearance, but not a dandy.
Must be jolly, accommodating, con-
not a flatterer.
Must revere and respect the aged.
Must sho\v courtesy to men and
women.
Must not smoke or drink or he
guilty of attendant evils. -
Must not sneer at religion or joke
lightly of it.
Must not recognize a different stan-
dard for men and women.
The physical qualifications were
averages taken from the thousands of
replies, each girl being asked to sub-
mit the measurements of what she
considered her ideal man. Some of
them liked giants, and some liked
little fellows. The unusually tall girls
liked short men while the plump girls
liked tall, attenuated fellows. The
rule of contrasts was followed almost
lnvarlably in every case, where the
girl who made her choice of an ideal
was small or large compared with the
average girl.
Mental and moral requirements
varied a great. tical, too. Some girls
put. ability to cook ahead of all other
standards.
One surprising feature, says the
'Telegraph," ls that the girls canvas-
sed seemed to prefer men of, merely
good appearance, “who could put up a
good front" to just handsome men.

An illuminating idea struck the head
master of the London County Council
School in Stepney, who arranged lhtu
the boys attending thc school should
write essays on the subject of “Glrls.’
No coaching was given to the boys,
who where told to sit down and write
what they thought about girls. Some
of the results follow:
A distinguishing feature among
girls and young women especially ls
their love ot’ liners in dress, and lt
is sometimes whispered about that
some young ladies powder their coun-
tenance ,lust-ln using some slnng~~
to swank.-Morris Green.
A girl is never satisfied with her
clothes or her home, especially when
her father is not well off. . .
A girl has mnnyndvantsges. as well
as disadvantages. She ls more tidy
than a boy, and her clothes are seldom
torn. Girls do not like fighting, but
their only way of having revenge is
by tale-telling, which is a very un-
sportsmanliko method.
When their faults are corrected by
soherer people than themselves they
think they are insulted.--A. Bender-
sky.
There is the proper' spirit of chival-
ry`about Charles Edgeil, who writes:
"Boys should always take care ol’
girls and sec that no harm befalls
them, and if another boy is hitting
a girl it is his duty to help her."
"Girls are supposed," says A. l\»i-al‘-
lrofski. “to he more tender than boy;
therefore they are treated gentler by
males. They are- also more trusting
and they can also be trusted in most
cases.”
An observant lad with an incipient
sense of humor is B. Smith, who
writes:
“Glrls,are not all alike. Some are
very clever and some very silly. Most
girls are. .very funny. They like to
fancy themselves very much. They
get their own way too much, yetboys
are useful. . .
“Not many girls are satisfactory.
They worry the life out of their
mothers and fathers for clothes and
such things. . .
"A girl, if she wants a thing just to
the minute and cannot get it, will
kick up ructions until she gets it. and
sometimes she gets it In a way that
she does not like.”
J. Herman is just as merciless in
his comments on the sex. He writes:
“A girl who has an ugly face is
BIWHYB more conceited than a girl
who is nice-looking. . .
“Nearly all girls wear belts. They
ull them as ti ht as ossibl because
of them do cut up some hideous-'
looking figures."
C. Fox has no illusions about mat.rl~ l`
mony. His terseness is sadly eloquent:
"When girls are of age they marry.
Sometimes they are very sorry they
have married." ' ` f'
“When” a girl goes into a hat shop,"
writes D. Echott with a cynicism be-
yond hls years, "to buy a hat, which
may cost a good deal of money, by
the time she steps otit of the slfop
she does not want it because it is out
of fashion."
