Toe leading roles are in the hands of Bob Cole and BillyJohnson, the podular colored comedians who have won distiactiun in their parts. Bob Coleas a tramp is un- donbtedly the foremost colored comedian of the day. His work hae been compared with that of Dan Daly and Wa'ter Jonee. The New York Sun of April 6th, eaid “He has more merit than either of these great comedians, and is funnier than Ward and Vokes rolled together.” While Jobuscn 18 an artist to his finger tips, these com~ edians are fortunate in having their sup- port the most popular and accomplished entertainers of their race. This pro- duction has been a most pleasing surprise to both press and public, and is the best diversion ever given by the negro on the stage. When an entertainment is an-~ nounced to be given by colored performers the general impression is that it will be a combination ,of {ministrelsy, planta ion and levee scenes, with perhaps, a cake walk; but this performance is a departure from snything yet given by colored per- formers, and on its second tour many new and novel features will be introduced; new songs especiaily written by Cole and Jobnsons, autbors of the “Chine and tne Coon,” 4-11-44,” “The Black Four’Hundred’s Ball,” etc., and everything will*be done to exceed the brilliant success of the past season. Messrs. Cole & Johnson originated and staged the production of “The Black Patti Troubs- dours” season of 1895 avd were the leading comedians; in this production they are the stars, and have been most enthusiastically received, the performance being attended by society everywhere. The company or- ganized for their support is composed of the most refined as well as artistic colored talent inthe world, includirg the well-known comedians Tom Brown, as leading support, R. A. Kelly, J. A. Shipp, Floyd Gibbs, the greatest living biack tenor, Miss Julia Roane, soprano, and Miss Vincent Bradley, with an efficient chorus. In every way it isthe best aggre - gation of colored entertainers to be seen. It is in October and November tbat tne Sharp tWinges of pain, and long days and weeks of agony make thou- sands wish for death as a release from suf- tering. Octoberaod November are ‘he months most fatalto rbeumatic mortal-— it is the time when d ath reaps its richest harvest. Just here the statement cannot be too plainly submitted, that Paine's Celery Compound is the ouly reliable cure in the world for ali forms of rheumatism and the ninety nine our of every hundred who have died from the disease could have been cured if the great compound had been used in time. The prime cause of rheumatism, as of organs are deranged; the food remaias too long in the stomach, it turns sour, and the resulting acid enters the blood. Nature tries to get rid of this acid through the urine or perspiration. The patient gets a slight cold iu some way,and the acid cau-~ not be expelled. There are chills, pao in the back, quickened pulse, coated tongue, constipation, extreme thirst, poor appetite and sediment- joaded urine. Soon the joints swell, usually the knees, elbows and | is how rheumatism originates. For long years it has been a recognized fact that celery freely eaten bas given re- liat to rheumatism suff-rers. In the Lancet of August 13 we took notice of the suspicion of uncleamness which we fear must, at all events under present con- ditions ot trade, remain inseparably connect- ed with our clothes, and especially with all bought underwear. So long as it is custom- ary for clothiers to send out, practically at random, their material in the form of piece-work, so long will it be impossible to guarantee either its wholesome or it cleanly condition, Neither can it be denied that the inconvenience and even danger implied in this practice are much en- hanced by the prevalent system of “sweating.” While this continues any- thing like effective cleanliness is hardly to be looked for, and we have in that fact a substantial reason for the repression of this injurious form of forced labor. Were it abandoned the selection and supervision of suitable homes in which piece-work might be carried on would at least be much easier than it isat present. The case of public laundries is at once different and similar. Thanks to the nature ef the work, there is less risk of impurity. We should neverthe- less be pleased to see some form of inspec- tion applied to these establishments. As to the needless, haphazard and thoroughly un- business-like practice of trying on under- clothing forwarded on approval, the sooner this is discontinued the better. In existing circumstances every purchaser of ready- made clothing must understand that he hag really no protection against the activities either of contagious germs or of the more evident animalcules save the maxim caveat emptor. —Lancet.
