That there was in years past a large outtlow of population from the -_If‘royinces tothe smtesis imiisputibis, though it would be very diillcult to determine itz- precise extent. In the days when each political party blziiued the policy of the other party as the cause of the exodus there was no doubt ai plentiful supply of iiii»:inforiii;i.ion on the subject. First the Nlitisnitl Policy was brought in with thc cliizii' th it it would stop the outtliw of our peoplc, and it wus aftci~\\':u~ds claimed an-'l denied that it had done so. Then the Liberals under tool: ro stop the exodus and are nowclaiin- ing that they have nininly done so. To this the answer is made that last year there were household effects to the value of $1,165,803 exported, and over it million of this value went to the United States. Itisapretty fair inference that the householder-in most cases went with the effects and to the same place. Very shortly the Canadian census will be taken and we shall then know thc essential features of the increase and movements of our population during the ten years past. Iistimatcs and guesses have been from time to time made of the present population of the country, and it will not be surprising if many of these are f:und to be ton high. The exodus goes on, whether under Liberal or Consrrfa- tive rule, and in the ten years will probably be found to equal the intiux of settlers, so that if Canada retains a popu- lation equal to what she had in 1891 with the natural increase thereon added it will be as much as can reasonably be expected. In the recent prosperous years we have doubtless done something better than t-his, while in the earlier years of the decade the balance was probably the other way. In the year 1900 the settlers’ elf:-cts import-ed'made a total of $3,065,410 of which $3,385,724 was from the States. It is highly gratifying to note that twice as much value of this kind crossed from the States to Canada last year as from Canada to the States, whereas in former years the balance had been very largely the other way. It is to be hoped, and with apparently good reason to be believed, that the bilance may continue on the right side hereafter. The change has been mainly brought _about by an influx from the United States to Manitoba, the Northwest, and the mining regions of British Columbia. In the meantime there remains a constant exodus from Ontario, Quebec and the Maritime Provinces, an increasing propor- tion of which goes to the Canadian West while a large share still goes to the States. We incline to the opinion that the census will show the population of Prince Edward Island to be very little greater than it was in 1881 and 1S31. “There a population mainly devoted to farming his attained a density of 55 to the square mile any considerable increase catlnot be expecl:ed.i \Ve have very few factories except those of the dairy, no lumbering or mining industries, and until we develop manufacturingto some considerable ei.- tent the natural increase of our population will go abroad. The migratory instinct is very strong in the Anglo-Saxon race, the facilities for travel increase from year to year and the larger field of the great West and the United States will continue from year to year. I:-is announced that Lord and Lady Miuto will pay avisit to the Maritime Province during the coming summer. The exact date of the visit has not yet been tlxed. ` s la R11enmatismofthé&.cc.` f Uricacid ieftuiineihtoodi-I ‘ f »‘i by disordered kidneys ` 1 bdges along the nerve _ which branches from the eye over the forehead, and across the cheek to the ` aide of the nose. That is the philosophy of the old finan- cial (proverb, and its application is as broa as human life. Take care of what you eat, when you eat, ahd how you eat, and your stomach will take care of itself. But who takes care of such trivial things? That is why, someday, the majority of people have to take care of the stomach. \/Vhen that day comes, there is no aid so edec- tive in undoing the results of past care- lessness as Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery. It strengthens the stomach and restores the o ans of digestion and nutrition to a condition of healthy ac- . tivity. It cures biliousness, heartburn, liatulence, indigestion, palpitation, diz- ziness, cold extremities, and a score of other ailments which are but the symp- __ toms of disorder in the stomach and its allied organs. If you 'are sick you can consult Dr. R. V. Pierce, Buffalo, N. Y., by letter, free of charge. Each letter is treated as cacredly confidential. and an answer is promptly sent in a plain envelope with- out pzinting or advertising upon it.
