NOVEMBER 14, 1952 To Place Forum Building Tax On A Fairer Basis when Councillor E. 'C. JOIIIISIOIVI gave notice of intention to intro- duce a. motion setting ii new val- uation for tax purposes on the Forum at the City Council meet- ing this week he was, in effect, sponsoring a move to reduce taxes of the Forum. At the time the Forum was- bullt in 1935 the Provincial Leg- islature passed a statute giving the City Council the power to set a special tax for the new sport; building. The valuation then was placed at 56.500 and this was to be maintained for a period of 10 years. when it expired in 1945 no action was taken and taxes con- tinued to be paid on the some basis. However, when the City sent out its three special assessors last year they placed the Forum tax assessment on the basis of a :35.- 000 valuation. Forum officials showed their audited statements that since no profit was being made they could not pay such greatly increased taxes. For this reason Councillor Johnstone gave his iiotlce that he would make I motion to have the assessed value for taxation purpose lowered to 510,000 which Forum officials agreed would be a fair basis. Supporting Councillr Johnstonc was Councillor T. Roy Cudmorr: who spoke of the value of the Forum here as in community sports centre.
