A LARGE number of barrels of cement- to

THE market yesterday received a fair
attendance. Upwards of twenty loads of
hay odered and 45 to50c were the pre-
vailing prices. Imported cabbage, the
first of the season sold for 4e per lb.

THE work of remodelling the interior of
the Bank of Nova Scotia is progressing
favorably. Yesterday men were at work
Messrs. Bruce Stewart & Co. are at work
concealing the hot water pipes leading
through to the upper flats. _
JAMEs RYAN has resigned his position
as engineer of the government dredge
George McKenzie and is succeeded by
George Crawford, Pictou. Mr. Ryan has
since undertaken the work of fitting with
machinery the new dredge built by James
Kitchin of River John to be used by
the contractors for the Hillsborough
bridge near Charlottetown.-Halifax Hei-
ald.
THE Schr. Blanche M. Thornburn,
being loaded by Wedlock Bros. of Stanley
for Sydney with 4,000 bushels oats, 2,000
bushels potatoes, ten tons hay and 200
bushels turnips, is ready, for sea. The
Howard L. is also loading for the same
ilrmand will be ready for sea in a few
days with 5,000 bushels oats, 2,000 bushels
potatoes and ten tons hay.
REv.W.H.SMI'rH delivered his highly in-
teresting lecture on an Excursion through
England and Scotland, in Baptist Church,
Montague, last evening. A large audience
was present to hear the Rev. gentleman’s
excellent lecture and thoroughly enjoyed
the views, among which were many of the
public buildings, parks and monuments in
London and in Scotland. Scenes were
shown of places in connection with the
lives of Sir Walter Scott and Robert
Burns, also some choice Highland
scenery.

In the House of Commons today E. F.
Clarke raised the question of the tax on‘
commercial travelers, imposed by the
Province of Prince Edward Island. He
asked if any effort was being made to re-
move the tax. The Minister 'of Marine
and Fisheries replied that Prince Edward
Island makes the contention that the tax
on commercial travelers is no heavier
than impositious nn local businesses of a
a similar kind. W. F. McLean held that
the tax conflicted with the terms of Con-
federation, and as such v a= ultra vires.
Sir L..u.s Davies assured the-House that
the question was engaging the close at~
teution ofthe Minister of Justice, who
is now in communication with the Gov-
ernment of Prince Edward Island.
