Hospital, June I to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hughes (nee Jean Heck- hert) a son. Stephen Henry, 1 sensitivity. in the ordinary no so of the Word. is en undesir- abe personality trait. Psycho- lnglcaiiy it may. perhaps. be ex- piained in terms of the inferior- ity complex. Mcrally it is a form of pride. it results from an un- due geslimaiiun of self. with an accompanying fear that 'others may not estimate us according to our supposed worth. As a form of pride, it must not have place in the life of the Christian. In the Christian life there Is room for no vice. even one seemingly . gill. Sensitivity. in another under- standing of the word, is a desir- able personality trait. Psycho- logically it may. perhaps be ex- plalned in terms of the well- adjusted personality. Moraily it is a form of charity. It results from with an accompanying lest we should not estimate liim according to his true worth. As a practical manifestation of charity it should have place in the life of every Christian. No virtue is foreign to the life of the Christ- inn. This latter tinderslaiidiiig of the word sensitivity might be designated as aciice sensitivity. in opposition to the former understanding which might be designated as passive sensitivity. Passive sensitivity is self-ceiiter- ed undesirable as a persnnniliv trait-indicating as it does a lack of real maturity - and mildly vicious. , Active sensitivity is desirable as a personality trail-indicating ,a real maturity. and virtuous. ! The tHeiping' Kind This active sensitivity forsees and prevents, in the literal sense of the word, the likes and dis- likes of the other. whatever is forseen as likely to inflict need- less hurt, or discomfort, on the other is avoided. Whatever is forseen as likely to help. Please or sustain the other is under- taken. Whatever threatens the security, or well-being oi the other. is, if possible. prevented. His needs. if forseen, are antici- pated. and prevented. in the literal sense of the word. before they become actual needs for him. if this is possible. Active sensitivity has very deep roots. it is founded on tile effec- tive conviction that the other of our association is a person, with susceptibility to pleasure or pain, capable of love or hate. respon- sive to warmth or coldness of affection just as we. It is im- pliciliy recognized and provided for in the words of Jesus Christ: ”Dn unto others as you would have others do unto you." The effective conviction, simple as it may seem. becomes oper- stive only in the lives of the psychologically and morally ma- ture. Children and young people are notoriously unaware of how their actions affect the other. The Card of Thanks I wish to express my sincere thanks to Dr. Campbell. Rev. Cob- sciousness of the other arises and increases with increased age and maturity. At its point of maxi- mum increase this other-com sciousiiess submerge: sell-con sciouaness. The self-love which flows from self-consciousnes is transflgured in the other-love which flows from other-conscious ness. This is implicity recognised and provided for in the first and greatest commandment: ”'l'hou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart. and with they whole soul, and with thy whole mind, and thy neighbor as thy- self.” Moral immaturity The maturity of which there is question here is not necessarily correlative to chronological age. Some, even the mature in vears, never attain to this other con- sciousness which characterizes psychological and moral matur- ily. Such persons are sensitive in the extreme in the passive sense, insensitive to the extreme in the active sense. They expect the others to do unto them as they have no intention of doing to the others. This manifests both pyschoingical and moral immaturity. Active sensitivity should mani- fest itself in a certain gracious- ness and true charm in the pos- sessor. it is not subservient, weak, or face-serving. It is man- ly, or iadylike, as the case may be, strong, sincere. It is founded on principles more eievatedtlian the mere winning of friends and influencing of people. it is noble; constant, characteristic of human nature etg its best.
