You'll find them all. gentle read- gr, piesented this week by the Regional Drama Festival. And if you are like me and get a special lllt out of seeing friends and neigh- bor; appearing in new guises. you'll be at every performance. But of course you'll go for other reasons. too. One. that there is something about a play with "live" actors. men and women on the stage in the flesh, that has an ap- oealinlz quality that moving-PIG tures and 'l'.V. shows lack. Doesn't it take you back more than screen plays can to the time when you gave "shows" in the back-yard or barn or living room (and charged admission too(? For of course if it is true that we were all artists once (as was suggested in last week's column) it is doubly true. if that is possible. that we were all Actors once. Lucky we. l! we emerged from the make-be- Iieve world of childhood and our adolescent day dreams and can escape from our own limitations now and then by play-acting or play-viewing. For that of course is the underlying purpose of the rlrama---to enable us to lead for a while richer lives than our own: to supplement our own restricted experiences with those of other people under different circumst- ances. And the finer the drama, the more talented the actor, the more are we lifted out oi our own lives and live the lives oi the characters on the stage--the more indeed. do we "identify" ourselves Hero Of Titanic Sinking Said Badly lniured PETERBOROUGH. In many mental hospitals patients are en- couraged to act out their tears and hostilities. It is claimed that this hastens the cure of the actor- pstienis and the patients in the audience. I am glad however that the plays to be presented this week are comedies. The best comedies purge us or cleanse us through laughter. We see our follies reflected in the actors and because it is all in fun we learn without bitterness. I am looking forward especially to the presentation by the "Montague Players' Work-Shop" of Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion". If anything can change a snobbish attitude. the effort of the Phonetics' ( ll) Pro- fessor to transform a London flow- er girl into an Elegant lady. should turn the trick!
