THE CAD , TUES.{ OCT. 30/73 Page ;_ ' j " 4 A culture/is the creative Editorial: - " expression of a people. In— ‘ sofar as that people are the creators of themselves, their culture is the auth— entic expression of that creation. However, when a people are subservient to the ideals (idiology) of another, they cease to have a culture OF THEIR OWN! What is then called culture is nothing but a Editor: Concerning Oct. 16, edit- orial comment to Mr:‘King. In Canada, French‘is not a foreign language. Sure— ly your responsibility to Mr. King goes beyond ex— pressing "considerable re- gret", to arranging French language typing facilities and/or*suitable translation facilities. The extra onus put on French speaking contributors by expecting them to provide their own typing and translation is discriminatory. — Donna Greenwood Editor: This is the proposed change in the constitution that was presented to coun— cil last night and accept- ed. ARTICLE XIV — Personnel Board, section II, shall be, changed to read: THE PERSONNEL BOARD shall be responsible for the re- cruiting and selection of all non—elected personnel: and all salaried personnel 'employed by the UPEL S.U. That is, for all UPEI S.U. Committee Boards and all committees on which the UPEI S.U. shall appoint members and thus be re— presented, and all staff, student, or otherwise, which shall be employed_by the UPEI S.U. The Personnel Board shall administer sal- aries and honoraria given' to hire UPEI S.U. personnel‘ without obtaining prior .approval at a meeting of the Personnel Board. The Personnel Board shall also provide such services.to any sUb-organization of the UPEI S.U. which wishes to make use of this service manifestation of the "cult?- ural" achievements of those who dominate. Within capitalism, the ’ many who are expropriated by the few ( the Bourgiones Capitalist) are deprived of their own cultureal crea— tion and, thus, of the ‘means'of their own growth and development. They be— come therefore, mere slaves to the capitalist and cease Editor if the organizatflbn is not‘ included in the above. And also ARTICLE XVI section VII has been changed to the following: The Personnel Board shall interview persons seeking salaried employment and com— mittee chairmanship and re- commend the applicant on the following criteria. a) qualifications of appli— cants b) interest and enthusiasm of applicants . _ Any comments will be accept— ed by the Cadre. ‘ —Carol Ward Mr Editor; I would like to express my thanks to professor Ran hman for demanding last week, sensibility, and cl- arity in this university paper. I trust that hence- forth "towers of Babel", "fly—bottles", and "Humpty Dumpty" will no longer 80*, Ail these pages. I must also agree with- professor Rahman that the presence of "high-flown philosophy" in a.universi- ty paper, of all places, Mr. Editor, is indeed a detriment. One is now fo- ~rced to read the Cadre and, worse, to think about it. One is even aroused to wr- ‘ite replies and thus waste time, of which, alas, one phas far too little. Furthermore, Mr. Editor, it is indeed "nerve-wracke ing" to have such confused and confusing questions raised in interviews. Doa n't you know that freedom of Speech is leaving peo- ple free to say what they expect their listeners ex- pect to hear? Just give us the news, Mr. Editor, lea- ve the ideas to the neuro- logiSts and the electroen- cephalographs. Or, if we must have ideas than I would agree with prdfessor Rahman that, if their expression is not cl- ear and distinct, the iss- ues will be obscured and confused.. Here, unfortunately, I do not find Professor Rahman's suggestions very helpful. .a . to be humans quo—human. 'ICulture‘must be controllei by those about which cult- ure is a manifestation: to deprive them of their OWN‘I cultural'means is to de- prive them of the means for their own growth and develr‘ opment. This is why capital ist idiology must be de— feated by our people. Our very lives depend on i?!' ’ -Stan Dalton If one attempts to clarify the issues by a Wittgens- teinian psychoanalysis of our misuse of words, then one cannot begin by tel]- ing the patient to shut-up. Even Wittgenstein had to give up that princip1e(Wh- ereof one cannot s eak, one must be silent , becau 'use he found that what wo- uld then be said was triv- ial and empty. Imagine Fr- eud telling his patients to speak only "clearly and without confusion": Nor is it any more useful to simply translate one's "verbal muddle" into ano- ther language: Straight and Crooked Thinking, Thinkigg to Some Purpose, People in Egandries. The problem wie th‘Professor Rahman's sug- gested books is that they hide the fact that there _ is straight and crooked th inking about Straight and Crooked Thinking, that th- ere are some (not all2) purposes to Thinking to S- ome purpose, and that peo— ple are in quandries about People in Quandries. In th- is connection, let me sug- get H. Marcuse's ng_gim;_ ensional Man. One should, of course, "be ' careful in making words mean what one wants them to mean“. But the first st- ep is,to recognize that this Egg be done, that wo- rds are used, and only be- cause of that they are se- nsible. They are not sens- ible in themselves. If one . is_not using them, then tht- ey are sensible because so- meone else is uSing them. That is the real tyranny of words on the mind. Is a use of words by the Other a God given right? Is it a matte er of knowledge or faith?
