' " Asia in THESE FIJI , Afew 8085 on tr" As a preliminary step in a program of modernization, the Canadian National Railways in 1950 completely dieselized train service on Prince Edward Island thus making it the first province in Canada to have its entire railway mileage operated by modern diesel locomotives. An additional step was taken in the fall of 1951 when the Canadian National inaugurated a truck service between Charlottetown, Souris, Georgetown, Murray Harbour, Summerside, etc. It is the intention to extend this truck service to Tignish this summer. Providing permissiotll is forthcoming it is now pro- posed, as a further step in the modernization inf transportation on the Island, to incorporate a provincial bus company subject to the statutes and regulations of the Province of Prince Edward Island. The purpose of such a bus company would be to act with the railway in providing 1 rail-highway coordinated service sub- stantially better than the services presently offered by mixed trains. In order to implement such a coordinated service the railway will request that the bus company be granted highway licenses along the following routes:- Elmira - Souris - Charlottetown. Georgetown - Charlottetown. Charlottetown - Borden - Summeriide. Charlottetown - Summerside - Tignish. ' Murray Harbour - Chorloiielewn (May In to November 30th). The services contemplated would be performed by large, modern buses on schedules considerably faster , than those offered by present mixed trains. Trains Nos. 59 and 40 between Charlottetown and the mainland ' would continue to operate. By means of the proposed service passengers from the ends of the Island, such as Elmira, Souris, Georgetown, Montague, Murray Harbour and Tignish, as well as those at intermediate points, would be able to travel to and from the mainland without having to spend the night at Charlottetown or Summer- side. During periods of the year when the roads are blocked with snow or are inoperative by reason of restrictions placed upon them by provincial authorities because of spring thaws or other causes, the railway will undertake to operate passenger services in similar fashion to that which now exists, should the bus company be unable to operate its services. In making this request to operate an improved pas- senger service it is not the intention of the railway or the proposed bus company to seek a monopoly of transportation on the Island because the proposed bus services are designed to handle passenger trafiic presently moving by rail. ' It must be emphasized that the proposed coordination of rail services with present truck and proposed bus services is in no way designed as a preliminary step in any line abandonments on the Island.
