They have been asking about base-
ball in the Old Country for a little
,while now. Various attempts have

.land, but with only scant success.
‘One Englishman who has seen base-
ball was asked to write his impres-
sions.
This is what he wrote:
The national game of Russia con-
sists in sending the cleverest citizens
on walking tours to Siberia. Spain
delights in shooting the educated,
and the favorite pastime of Ireland
and Scotland is emigration. Eng-
1and's chief hobby is building float-
ing murder mansions, whilst Ameri-
ca's delight is baseball. The German
keeps tit by lifting a lager beer mug
in his own; the Portuguese keeps in
condition by rolling cigarettes; the
Englishman keeps wide awake worry-
ing about German invasions; but thn
Americnus train- by practising encour-
aging yells to cheer their favorite
teums. My mission in writing this
article is to popularize baseball in
England, I have been to one match,
and studied Johnny McGrnw’s book
on the game, and am therefore quite
unbiased. It is rather an intricate
and scientific game, but any person
who reads these notes may become
quite as expert as myself.
There are only about 895 rules to
he observed. The best way to mem-
orize them is to commence at the
age of six weel-5 and grow up with
them.
Rule 70, however, seems to me _ a
serious stumbling block to hai-itball

put into operation, would play havoc
